There are over 100 armed conflicts happening in the world right now.

Here are 5 you may not have heard about๐Ÿ‘‡
1๏ธโƒฃ #Ethiopia:

Hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes due to the violence.

Families are separated and are vulnerable to exploitation.

Access to basic services, like water and healthcare, is limited.

Their resilience is stretched to the limit.
2๏ธโƒฃ #Afghanistan:

The combined effects of loss of income, fighting, lack of cash, food prices increase and the harsh winter are devastating the lives of millions.

55% of the population, 24.4 million people, need humanitarian assistance.

This is a 30% increase from last year.
3๏ธโƒฃ #Yemen:

The country is going through one of the hardest times in its modern history.

80% of the population, which is 20.7 million people, are currently in need of humanitarian assistance.

4.71 million children and women are acutely malnourished.
4๏ธโƒฃ The Democratic Republic of Congo:

The humanitarian crisis is one of the largest in the world.

The number of people in need has increased by 275% since 2015 and continues to grow.

In addition to 5.2 million displaced people, the #DRC also hosts more than 527,000 refugees.
5๏ธโƒฃ #Somalia:

The country goes through one of the most severe droughts in decades.

This worsens the food insecurity theyโ€™re currently facing.

Malnutrition rates are also rising because of deteriorating purchasing power and limited access to a healthy diet and healthcare.

Time is running out for hundreds of thousands trapped in #Mariupol.

They have endured a living nightmare. They cannot hold on any longer.

Weโ€™re urgently calling for a humanitarian agreement.

People need safety. People need food. And they need it now.

๐Ÿ‘‡
The sound of warfare is constant.

People of all ages are sheltering in unheated basements. Itโ€™s freezing in #Mariupol.

People are terrified. Theyโ€™re traumatized. Theyโ€™re getting sick.

They have no way out.
In #Mariupol right now, everyone is facing extreme or total shortages of the basic necessities of life.

๐Ÿ‘‰ No food.

๐Ÿ‘‰ No water.

๐Ÿ‘‰ No medicine.

๐Ÿ‘‰ No survival.

Our colleagues in #Mariupol are taking shelter in our office.

This is how one described the situation ๐Ÿ‘‡
โ€œThere's no electricity, water and gas supply. Meaning no means for heating.

Some people still have food, but Iโ€™m not sure for how long it will last.

Many report having no food for children.โ€
โ€œPeople report varying needs in medicine. Especially for diabetes and cancer patients.

But there is no way to find it anymore in the city.

People are getting sick already because of the cold.โ€

Many of you are asking about our work in #Ukraine, as the situation becomes increasingly dire and desperate.

In just 2 weeks:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Homes have been reduced to rubble

๐Ÿ‘‰ Families have no food, no water, no heat, no medical care

๐Ÿ‘‰ 2 million people have fled

What are we doing? ๐Ÿ‘‡
Right now, we're present in:

๐Ÿ“ Kyiv
๐Ÿ“ Mariupol
๐Ÿ“ Odessa
๐Ÿ“ Donetsk
๐Ÿ“ Luhansk
๐Ÿ“ Severodonetsk
๐Ÿ“ + other places

Additional staff arrived this week to help rapidly scale up our work.

This includes medical staff, weapons contamination specialists and emergency team members.
So far, our team across #Ukraine have delivered:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Food, water, hygiene items
๐Ÿ‘‰ Shelter materials, fuel
๐Ÿ‘‰ Tools for water infrastructure repair
๐Ÿ‘‰ Cash assistance
๐Ÿ‘‰ Blankets, mattresses, pillows, and more

To help tens of thousands of people.

People are living in terror in Mariupol, desperate for safety.

Todayโ€™s attempt to start evacuating an estimated 200,000 people has failed.

The failed attempts underscore the absence of a detailed and functioning agreement between parties to the conflict. #Ukraine

Thread ๐Ÿ‘‡
We are not and cannot be the guarantor of a ceasefire agreement between the parties or of its implementation.

As a neutral and impartial humanitarian intermediary, we've been facilitating dialogue between the parties on the safe passage of civilians.

Civilians need safety.
Parties need to agree not just in principle but also on the details of safe passages.

In particular:

*Specific time, locations and evacuation routes
*Who may be voluntarily evacuated
*Whether aid can be brought in, not just the evacuation of civilians out

Weโ€™ve received thousands of questions on the Geneva Conventions.

So, weโ€™re going to break down the rules of war you need to know right now.

All states have signed these โ€“ and are legally obligated to follow them.

Thread ๐Ÿ‘‡
Civilians.

๐Ÿ‘‰ They cannot be attacked.
๐Ÿ‘‰ They must be protected.
๐Ÿ‘‰ They are not a target.

Whatever wording you use โ€“ the message is the same. It is illegal.
Combatants.

Combatants must distinguish themselves from civilians in all military operations by wearing identifiable insignia and carrying arms openly. This helps protect civilians from harm.

Combatants must respect the rules of war. Period.

We strongly condemn the latest surge in violence in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Civilian casualties mount as there is intense shelling in urban areas.

Just today, an @AzRedCrescent volunteer died. He was a father of two.
With the @IFRC and the Red Cross Red Crescent family, we offer our most heartfelt condolences to the family of the volunteer.

Two other volunteers were injured.
Death.
Destruction.
Desolation.

The intense shelling we witnessed today is unacceptable.
