For several weeks, Russia has been carrying out a disinformation campaign about the supposed development of chemical agents by 🇺🇦. These baseless allegations are an integral part of Moscow’s war propaganda aimed at spreading confusion.
Background 👇
Russia has regularly spread disinformation about chemical weapons, making false allegations as it has done in Syria. ⬇
All that despite reports by the relevant international organizations establishing the Syrian regime’s responsibility in the use of chemical weapons.
After supporting the Syrian regime in its use of chemical weapons against its own people, Russia has used it in attempts to assassinate Sergei Skripal and Alexei Navalny while conducting similar disinformation manoeuvres contrary to all evidence.
In the context of its aggression against 🇺🇦, Russia has made further false accusations. In the name of 🇪🇺, 🇫🇷 has expressed its major concerns about the risk of a Russian false flag operation aimed at wrongly attributing responsibility to 🇺🇦.
France is fully committed to defending and supporting the CWC and OPCW. This commitment is also clear in the International Partnership against Impunity for the Use of Chemical Weapons created by 🇫🇷, in which 40 States participate along with the European Union.
The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) prohibits the development, production, acquisition, storage and possession of chemical weapons. It is practically universal (193 States Parties) and is the first Convention to ban a whole category of weapons of mass destruction.
Russian disinformation manoeuvres and attempts to deny clearly established facts undermine one of the pillars of global security: chemical disarmament.
We cannot accept that.
- Intense bombing, especially in Mariupol and Mykolaiv, maintains heavy pressure on urban centres in the east and the south.
