What journalists and hosts got wrong about #Ukraine and Russian aggression since 2014 (thread)🧵

Russian disinformation is not only one of many tools of the Kremlin's policy. When diplomats speak, they tell target group adjusted messages -->media needs to debunk them instantly
"Neutrality". There is no neutrality towards the truth in journalism. The problem is that many hosts and journalists are not able to debunk Russian false narratives. Some positions by the Russian Federation are obviously absurd, others are believed by many.
Language situation: Pres. Zelenskyy is from a Russian speaking region, and his TV series (like many other shows) were mostly in Russian,
The Russian language is common in Ukraine and in Kyiv too. However, many people in the West still believe Russian claims that it is forbidden.
For instance, on Austrian TV guests claimed several times that "Russian is forbidden in Ukraine", but the host did not react. During panel discussions, another guest could debunk the false claim, but for the viewer, it seems like "two opinions" ---> #FalseBalance
Even many (opposition) citizens from the Russian Federation moved to Ukraine, but almost no journalist pointed out that fact as a response to Russian diplomats and politicians.
In 2014, Russian officials claimed there was a "threat to Russian speaking people" in Crimea to justify the annexation. In the example of many regions of Ukraine, we can see that this statement was invented and false --> Media needs to highlight that fact
Only experts should host a panel discussion or interview, not popular hosts who have no clue about Ukraine.

As long as hosts or journalists answer Russian diplomats with "...but do you think the last 8 years in Donbas justify a full-scale invasion" we have a problem...
Indeed, even the Russian version of the situation in Donbas would not justify a full-scale war, but it's not even close to the truth.

Russian nationalists & Russia triggered the imperialistic war in Donbas. They tried to create "Novorossiya" in 2014, but fortunately, they failed
Journalists missed monitoring of Russian media: The weeks before February 24th was dominated by Putin's
and Lavrov's diplomacy speeches and "negotiations", but in Russian media, you could already see what they really thought about Ukraine for years
In general, it is a lack of knowledge about actual life in the so-called "former Soviet Union" countries that are independent states for more than 3 decades. Russian propaganda is so effective because we are an easy target. Unfortunately, this applies to many journalists too
Ukraine, but also Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Georgia, Poland were often shown as "Pawns" on a chess game between "Superpowers". Their legitimate interests were ignored, journalists kept their eyes on countries they know: USA, Russia and China. Some even blamed NATO
Russian officials expressed their "concerns" and "fears" about NATO, but almost nobody questioned the validity of their messages.

There are qualified journalists, but usually, they are working in the background,---> Russian #disinformation can still spread via OUR media

puls24.at/video/pro-und-…

Some facts about the so called "People's republics" in #Donbas & why Ukrainians fight so hard to avoid the creation of new ones.🧵

- no rule of law, freedom of speech, democracy of any kind

- blackmailing, robbery, torture and executions of civil activists by the "authorities"
The founders of the "republics" were two Russian citizens (Girkin, Borodai, both radical nationalists and warlords) and one local (Pushilin) who worked for a finance fraud led by a former Russian MP.
Russia uses the situation in Donbas to justify its war against #Ukraine "look what Ukraine did to Donbas for 8 years." The truth is, that many civilians died because of the Russian forces and they tried to expand their territory, especially to take over Mariupol

#Kramatorsk and #MH17

Russia tries to confuse us again with #Disinfo 🧵

2014: "Our guys do not have a BUK" (they had one of course, they even showed off with it on TV)

2021: "Russia does not have Tochka-U rockets."...of course they have...
After the terrible attack in Kramatorsk, a vast number of twitter profiles suddenly commented, that Russia does not have such rockets, so the Ukrainians are the ones to blame.
The target group of these trolls are people who say things like: "the Ukrainians want to provoke, the want to drag us into this war." "Cui bono", "I do not say that they did it themselves, but..." (but actually they say exactly this).

So while Russian disinformation is so repetitive, why can't we do the same with some facts about the last 8 years🧵

No, RU language is NOT banned in Ukraine🇺🇦:
Recently abducted mayor of Melitopol: "We speak Russian, there is no problem, but the RU soldiers did not believe me."
"8 years of genocide in Donbas 2014-2022":

~13.000 people have been killed. ~10.000 of them UA soldiers or Russian/"pro Russian" fighters.

~3000 civilians died

Russian forces shelling Mariupol is not new:
31 civilians killed 2015
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_2…
"Separatism":

Igor Girkin "Minister of Defense DNR", a Russian nationalist from Moscow said once "I pulled the trigger", without him there would be no war. Alexander Borodai "Prime Minister DNR"(also a facist from Moscow) was also a leading figure.

Examples how Russia is bashing Ukraine or contradicting it's own propaganda 🧵(Thread)

1) The crucified kid: Yes, that fake video still matters in Russia and many believe the story about "evil Ukrainians killing an innocent Russian kid."
2) Hitler on new "Ukrainian Banknote". Of course the banknote is made by photoshop, but Rossija1, Russia's main TV channel reported the whole story as a "fact" and many people believed that Ukraine is gonna have a Hitler-banknote soon. Image
"Anti-fascist" forces are fighting against "fascist Ukrainians in Donbas": There are so many nationalistic & neo-nazi groups involved on the pro-Russian side, impossible to mention all of them : RNE, NOD, Sparta Battalion, Interbrigades, Russian Orthodox Army and many more.
