#France will provide #Ukraine with 12 #Caesar #howitzers. French president Macron alluded to the transfer in an interview with Ouest France published earlier today. The publication then found out additional details of the deal.🧵1/

France not only will provide the Caesar howitzers to Ukraine, it also will train 40 Ukrainian soldiers how to operate the weapon system. The training sessions will take place in France. 2/
The Caesar howitzers are wheeled self-propelled 155 mm artillery systems. The Caesar has a firing range of 42-50 km and typically is operated by a crew of five (but can be operated by as few as three people). 3/ Image
The news of France sending howitzers to Ukraine comes on the heels of reports earlier this week that Ukraine also will be receiving PzH 2000 howitzers, most likely from the Netherlands (see post below). /end
One key advantage of the Caesar howitzers France is sending Ukraine is that they can fire "BONUS" smart munitions. These are basically mini-missiles that steer themselves toward targets based on sensors and a database of target senor profiles.

It is not know for certain whether France is providing Ukraine with BONUS munitions together with the Caesar howitzers, but it is assumed that at least some BONUS munitions will be going Ukraine's way.

The New York Times yesterday published a long article about former German chancellor Gerhard #Schroeder, whose continuing close ties to Russia and Vladimir Putin have essentially destroyed his reputation in the West. 1/

Schroeder was interviewed for the lengthy Times article. One statement he made during the interview captures a key reason he's become a pariah: "I don’t do mea culpa," he told the Times. "It’s not my thing." 2/
