WHO is scaling up its response to the health crisis in the Sahel, where more than 33 million people across πŸ‡§πŸ‡«, πŸ‡¨πŸ‡², πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡©, πŸ‡²πŸ‡±, πŸ‡³πŸ‡ͺ, πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬ need life-saving aid bit.ly/31vWqUc
The #Sahel region has some of the worst health indicators in the world.
On average, people in the region - live 20 years shorter than in Switzerland.
Maternal mortality is 100 times higher.
This is unacceptable bit.ly/31vWqUc
The #Sahel region's humanitarian situation worsened in 2021:
πŸ’” Cholera outbreaks in πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬πŸ‡³πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡¨πŸ‡²πŸ‡§πŸ‡«πŸ‡²πŸ‡±
πŸ’” Yellow fever in πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡©πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬πŸ‡³πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡¨πŸ‡²
πŸ’” Over 1.5m internally displaced people in πŸ‡§πŸ‡«
πŸ’” 27% of health services disrupted in πŸ‡²πŸ‡±
πŸ’” +30m people with high risk of food insecurity
Only half of the funding needed for life-saving assistance in Sahel region was received in 2021.
To respond to the region's acute health needs & strengthen its presence in the region, WHO released US$8.3m from its Contingency Funding for Emergencies bit.ly/31vWqUc
In coming six months, WHO will:
- provide tents & medical supplies in πŸ‡§πŸ‡«
- train health workers, improve diagnostics & treatment for cholera in πŸ‡¨πŸ‡²
- provide Emergency Health Kits to provide care for 100,000 patients in πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡©
In coming six months, WHO will:
- send psychologists across πŸ‡²πŸ‡±
- help train four rapid response teams to help fight outbreaks in πŸ‡³πŸ‡ͺ
- reestablish health services for 300,000+ people in Borno state in πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬
Contributions are needed so WHO can save lives and protect health in the #Sahel region.

See WHO's 2022 Emergencies Appeal for the African region bit.ly/3xgFfYe
Contributing to WHO's 2022 Emergencies Appeal allows to:
- work with @unis_sahel to ensure health services in remote areas & to vulnerable populations
- distribute medicines & emergencies supplies
- vaccinate children in the #Sahel region
