VARIANT UPDATE—#BA2 subvariant family continues to grow to now 96.8% with the more aggressive sub-subvariant BA.2.12.1 now at 28.7% and surging quickly. Old #Ba1 Omicron nearly extinct. Be cautious folks. #CovidIsNotOver

Figure Ht @DrWilliamKu
2) Are there more potentially dangerous variants out there? Oh yes, #BA4 is really worrisome for example. It’s not in the US yet but it is growing in South Africa.
3) this surge in deaths is almost all #BA2 wave deaths in the UK 🇬🇧— it’s sad people ignore it and don’t care about others dying anymore.
4) I’m watching #BA4 and #BA5 in South Africa 🇿🇦 carefully. It might become worrisome soon. Some uptick in hospitalizations. Watching.
5) don’t get too confident with your past infection based immunity. It’s mostly only best against the old strain that you got. But older strains are being replaced by newer variants that you might not have full protection against.
6) we are in no way past the pandemic. A pandemic that affects the rest of the globe still will affect the US no matter how we try to put our heads in the sand like an ostrich.

Dear @TuckerCarlson, Shame on you for attacking me with this nonsense & spreading disinformation as you always do on a news channel whose propaganda is likely responsible for countless #COVID deaths across the country and around the world. THREAD with the facts: 🧵
2) First of all, you attacked me about Shanghai’s #COVID19 situation—but you based it on a @bbcworldservice twitter post that misquoted me— @BBCNews staff had already deleted and retracted it on April 12th, and then apologized to me on April 13th for the mis-phrasing. Image
3) Secondly, I have 100x more credibility to talk about Shanghai’s COVID—I’m not just an epidemiologist, but I was born in Shanghai, lived in Shanghai, speak the local Shanghainese dialect, and have family members living through the crisis in Shanghai. You sir, are none of above.

BREAKING—first ever human US case of #H5N1 avian flu confirmed in a Colorado man who had direct poultry exposure. This bird flu, now found in 34 states, has already led to 23 million poultry animals culled as of early April, because of deadliness to birds.
gazette.com/health/first-h… ImageImage
2) The man was exposed while working at a commercial farm on a prison pre-release employment program. He was culling birds as part of a prison program. coloradosun.com/2022/04/28/col…
3) CDPHE said that, because the man had been in close contact with infected poultry, it is unclear whether he had a full-blown infection. “Colonization,” when virus particles first enter the nose, is sometimes but not always a prelude to an infection.

HISTORIC—The FDA has now proposed banning menthol cigarettes, a landmark action applauded by leading health and civil rights groups. The FDA also proposed prohibiting flavored cigars, including in small cigarillos that are popular among teenagers. 🧵
washingtonpost.com/health/2022/04…
2) The proposed bans were announced by FDA commissioner Robert M. Califf in an appearance at a congressional subcommittee. He told the panel the agency had determined “that these actions are appropriate for the protection of public health” and would improve the health…
3) and “reduce the mortality risk of current smokers of menthol cigarettes or flavored cigars by substantially decreasing their consumption and increasing the likelihood of cessation.”

BREAKING—Moderna said Thursday that it had asked the FDA to authorize its coronavirus vaccine for children under 6. A top official said Moderna would finish submitting data by May 9. Data shows 37-51% efficacy (mostly Omicron) for symptomatic infection. 🧵
nytimes.com/2022/04/28/us/…
2) Moderna said Thursday the vaccine appeared to be 51 percent effective against symptomatic infection among those younger than 2, and 37 percent effective among those 2 to 5.
3) He said the Omicron variant, which proved adept at skirting the body’s first line of defense, accounted for about 80 percent of infections in the study group. That, he said, explains the low efficacy rate compared with earlier vaccine trials.

Whoa—of the 12 hepatitis cases in kids in Israel occurred in the last four months, ➡️11 of the 12 children had been infected with the #COVID19 in the previous year. None of the kid were vaccinated. One hypothesis is that liver inflammation is a #LongCOVID.
medriva.com/mysterious-cas…
2) also, “None of the children who have been diagnosed with hepatitis have been infected with the common hepatitis virus.”
3) inflammation is a major cardiovascular #LongCovid effect. It’s therefore plausible long term inflammation of the liver is possible too.
