Imagine if anyone working in the British press or news media had known about THIS prior to 2019!

What's that? Boris Johnson's antisemitic book came out in 2004, but the UK press & broadcast news media chose to focus on & demonise lifelong anti-racist Jeremy Corbyn instead?
Well imagine if anyone working in the British press or news media had known about ALL THIS prior to #GE2019!

What's that? Everyone in the UK press & broadcast news media DID know all this, but chose instead to focus on & demonise Jeremy Corbyn anyway?

Or imagine if anyone working in the British press & broadcast news media had known about THIS in 2020! What? Everyone DID know about it, but the UK press & broadcast news media chose to carry on misleading voters about Boris Johnson & demonise lifelong anti-racist Corbyn instead?

Given the non-dom billionaire-owned Daily Mail's support for the neofascist #Rwanda plan, here's a thread about Left-hating Harold Harmsworth - 1st Lord Rothermere, owner of the Mail - specifically his vocal support for both Hitler, & Mosley's British Union of #Fascists. Image
Devised in 1896 by Alfred Harmsworth (Viscount Northcliffe) & his brother Harold (Lord Rothermere), the Mail has campaigned against Unions & the Left, & against all women & most working-class men being given the vote.

By 1930, they owned 14 national daily & Sunday newspapers. Image
Harold Harmsworth (Lord Rothermere) was a great supporter of Adolf Hitler.

According to James Pool, author of 'Who Financed Hitler': "Shortly after the Nazis' sweeping victory in the election of September 14, 1930, Rothermere went to Munich to have a long talk with Hitler." Image

Very timely new article - The Alt-Right: Neoliberalism, Libertarianism & the Fascist Temptation, by Melinda Cooper.

It's paywalled, & complex so I'll try to summarise it.

…rnals-sagepub-com.hallam.idm.oclc.org/doi/full/10.11…
Neoliberalism & social conservatism have frequently coexisted. Yet the alt-right fits none of the previously identified alliances: it's not the neoliberal neoconservatism of the Reagan & Bush years, nor Third Way neoliberal communitarianism, nor neoliberal authoritarianism.
Instead, the alt-right claims intellectual descent from economic libertarianism & paleo- (as opposed to neo-) conservatism on the other. This paper traces the contours of this ‘paleolibertarian’ alliance, first by following the volatile political trajectory of Murray Rothbard...

#THREAD on this great article by Bruno De Oliveira.

69% of low-income private renters in England will be unable to eat & heat their homes at least one day per week because of rising living costs, the UK charity Crisis recently warned.

#CostOfLivingCrisis
theconversation.com/cost-of-living…
The poorest 10% of households spend up to three times more of their family budget on food & energy bills as compared to the wealthiest 10%, according to the Resolution Foundation. The IFS estimates that inflation rates for these poorest families could reach over 10% in 2022. Image
A growing body of evidence strongly suggests that #austerity policies are at least partially responsible for life expectancy stalling in England & Wales.

New research into social #inequality & mental distress shows, the psychological impact is profound.

#THREAD on Katherine Birbalsingh's fondness for Roger Scruton.

The Govt's Social Mobility Tsar's blog (2016 - 19) is accessible online. On April 15th, 2017, she wrote that she wants "to give them (her pupils) the chance to be just like Boris Johnson". 😬

"I’m in the game to change the stars of the children we teach, to give them the chance to be just like Boris Johnson (ie be articulate & knowledgeable & have all doors open to them in life)... Michaela make(s) social mobility a possibility for anyone who chooses to work hard." 😬 Image
Birbalsingh expresses her adoration for @Conservatives' favourite controversial hard-right reactionary traditionalist contrarian intellectual grifter, Roger Scruton, after a visit to her Michaela school - she compares him to Brad Pitt.😬

Let's talk about Roger Scruton... Image

A great & timely read: 'Spin Dictators: The Changing Face of Tyranny in the 21st Century', by Sergei Guriev & Daniel Treisman.

How a new breed of dictators hold power by manipulating information & faking democracy.

Does Britain have a #SpinDictator?

#THREAD

Over the past 40 years or so, the face of dictatorship has changed a great deal. Could Britain's increasingly antidemocratic & authoritarian Government mean Britain could be joining the likes of Hungary, Turkey & Rwanda in becoming an autocracy?

ft.com/content/ff7574…
The most notorious tyrants of the 20th century, including Hitler, Stalin, Mao Zedong & Idi Amin, ruled by means of mass violence, cults of personality, rigid ideological conformity, all-encompassing censorship & the exclusion of unwelcome foreign influences from their countries.

In 2020, the independent Sweden-based 'Varieties of Democracy Institute' ranked #Rwanda 150th out of 179 countries on its Index of Liberal Democracy - it's clearly #authoritarian. 🤬

But UK Govt Social mobility Tsar Birbalsingh says it's "lovely"! 😬

So who's right? 🤔
This article by Alexander Dukalskis, an expert on authoritarian states & international human rights, is about the multiple ways that authoritarian states – countries where the leadership maintains power by non-democratic means – manage their image abroad.

theconversation.com/how-authoritar…
To manage their image abroad, authoritarian states like #Rwanda try to advance a favourable narrative about themselves.

They do things like hire PR firms to produce positive content, disseminate #propaganda, & cultivate friendly foreigners who can speak on their behalf. 😬
