Paul Erickson says it was "odd and then galling" that the Coalition engaged in "an all-out assault on state and territory Labor Governments" mid covid pandemic. #auspol#npc
Erickson applying a gender lens to the covid response, noting Coalition govt's supposed heroes of the pandemic were all men; they ended free childcare; and Morrison's suggestion to solve women giving birth roadside w upgrade of Barton Highway rather than a maternity ward.
Erickson says after the gendered violence/sexual assault reckoning, two Morrison comments kept coming up in research:
* women's marchers lucky not to be met with bullets
* he understood issues as husband and father.
Erickson notes the Liberals thought net zero would see off the independent challenge.
"we never saw any evidence Morrison persuaded anyone... of his commitment to the climate ... hardly surprising given the empty & desperately political nature of where he landed" #auspol#npcs
"Being serious about the climate was critical to Labor gains in Bennelong, Chisholm, Higgins and Boothby, and being serious about jobs drove swings towards Labor in the Hunter and Central Queensland." - Erickson. #auspol#npc
Paul Erickson argues the 8 factors in the Coalition loss were institutional, not personal to Scott Morrison, and they were failures that snr ministers including Peter Dutton and Josh Frydenberg were actively involved in. #auspol#npc
Erickson dismisses the Labor are going backwards in the suburbs thesis, by noting the breadth of Labor's winning Coalition, and swings TO it in suburbs and regions. #auspol#npc
* coalition
Erickson says at next election Labor "won't be fighting Scott Morrison although we will be up against some of his nastier and more incompetent enablers." #auspol#npc
Erickson says there are "a number of issues" with election laws that will be scrutinised. Says he won't "make policy", but the 2019 review encouraged Labor to consider support for truth in political advertising. #auspol#npc

The list of charities and eminent Australians who have withdrawn or clarified "endorsements" taken out of context to fluff up Liberal candidates is LONG!
A thread!
This has happened with:
* PCYC & Paul Fletcher
* Brisbane Archdiocese & Julian Simmonds
Morrison said he accepted the resignation. "It isn't just about actual conflicts, the standards have an obligation to avoid perceptions of conflict". #auspol#ChristianPorter
Morrison appoints Angus Taylor to acting minister for industry, science and technology. #auspol
Morrison: "...whether it was the hesitancy around the AstraZeneca
vaccine, that many shared ... but this government didn't share, I can assure you"
FACT CHECK: between 8 April and 28 June adults aged 18-40 WERE NOT ELIGIBLE for vaccines, including AZ. #auspol#qt
If the government wasn't hesitant about AstraZeneca- why didn't it use the ample wiggle room in the ATAGI advice to allow people to take it with informed consent? theguardian.com/australia-news…
Why was there a late-night press conference passing on the ATAGI advice as if it were a fait accompli? Why did the vaccine horizons in June assume it wouldn't be used by October? theguardian.com/business/2021/…
Mark McGowan was pretty clear this evening that he expects virus free WA, QLD, SA, Tas and the NT will maintain their border restrictions if they're covid-free when Australia reaches the 70% vaccination target. #auspol
Earlier today, the Queensland deputy premier Steven Miles specifically credited the borders for eased restrictions eg dancing and standing at pubs.
Miles: "Border restrictions are critical to us continuing to have kinds of freedoms we have and people in other cities and states can only dream of."
