What a historic vote in the European Parliament! Polluters will pay and citizens are subsidised for climate change mitigation.

With the legislation adopted, we’ve finally managed to reconcile the two key climate policy principles: from now on, the polluter pays and the citizens will receive adequate support for the green transition. 2/7

Under the new system, the public will benefit from direct and indirect financial support from the fees paid by the big polluters.

The EU is supporting people to achieve a #climate-neutral lifestyle in a variety of ways: 3/7

It will be possible to support the installation of protection against summer heat waves and winter frosts through insulation, replacement of windows and doors, installation of #solarpanels, heat pumps, boiler replacement. 4/7

The current lack of an #electriccar charging network, which is slowing down the electric switchover, will also be eligible for funding from the SCF.
But improvements to public transport infrastructure, such as the rail network, will also be eligible. 5/7

Travel costs will also be reduced with money from the SCF, so that it can be used for cheaper train and bus tickets.

My position was clear even before the parliamentary debate: the green transition can only be achieved if the costs are not passed onto the public. 6/7

Because the fight against #climatechange will only be successful if we can build sufficient social support around it. 7/7
