#Extradition is emerging as the next frontier of #Taiwan’s outreach to #Europe. My new piece analyzes the status and content of six agreements on legal cooperation between Taiwan and European countries.
In criminal matters cooperation and extraditions, agreements that were signed with #Poland and #Slovakia can serve as models for engaging other #EU member states. 2/7
Among the 6 existing agreements, these two are the only broad-scope legal cooperation agreements, that include even extraditions, as the most visible and politically sensitive area of cooperation. 3/7
The remaining 4 agreements, signed with #Denmark, #Germany, #Switzerland, and #UK are single-issue deals that focus only on transfers of sentenced persons (a very different area of cooperation than extradition, which deals with the transfer of not yet convicted persons). 4/7
European nations should also pursue legal cooperation with Taiwan in areas beyond criminal law. Civil & commercial legal cooperation is less politically controversial and has a direct link to trade relations with Taiwan, which can benefit from easier contract enforcement. 5/7
On civil and commercial matters, Taiwan concluded the very first agreement in Europe with Slovakia in June 2022. 6/7
A natural next step would be to conclude similar agreements (both criminal and civil/commercial) with #Czechia and #Lithuania, two countries that have recently emerged as the most outspoken supporters of Taiwan in Europe. 7/7
