Sobering—Mega study from UK finds ~2 million people currently living in private households (📌3.1% of entire population of 🇬🇧) were experiencing self-reported long #COVID. Of those with #longCOVID—📌45% had LC at least one year previously, & 📌22% at least two years previously!👀 Image
2) Further, #LongCOVID symptoms adversely affected the day-to-day activities of 1.5 million people (73% of those with long COVID), with 384,000 (19%) reporting that their ability to undertake their day-to-day activities had been "limited a lot".

3) Fatigue continued to be the most common symptom reported by individuals experiencing long COVID (62% of those with self-reported long COVID), followed by shortness of breath (37%), difficulty concentrating (33%), and muscle ache (31%).
4) As a proportion of the UK population, the prevalence of self-reported long COVID was greatest in people aged 35 to 69 years, females, people living in more deprived areas, those working in social care, those aged 16 years or over who were not working and not looking for work
5) I’m extremely worried about what such long lasting debilitation of the population will mean — not just for economic impact in labor shortages and worker health, but also the health of millions worldwide with such lasting effects. It’s a huge decimation.

6) the DEMENTIA-LIKE cognitive impairment is one of the most serious. It’s not just occasional small brain fog. It’s often functionally disabling cognitive deficit that’s caused by #LongCovid 👇
7) the one light in the tunnel is that it’s possible the brain effects of #LongCovid might not be permanent for everyone - but the question is — how many will recover and for how long will it take???

CAUSE FOUND? The “unknown pneumonia” in Argentina is reportedly legionella bacteria, according to statements by a senator, but not officially confirmed yet. However, earlier tests negative for Legionella. It has now claimed 3 lives, including 2 HCWs.
eltucumano.com/noticia/actual…
2) I’m wary of disease proclamations made by a politician when it doesn’t come from a health agency or research lab. Earlier reports refuted legionella. Hence why it’s now head scratching. But maybe they just excluded certain forms of legionella but not all forms.
3) Earlier two days ago, the health minister and experts said legionella wasn’t the culprit. This is very confusing. I don’t know why the Senator is making statements without official data.

Scale of the disaster—beside 1/3 underwater:

📌1350 people killed
📌50M people displaced
📌900K livestock deaths
📌1M houses washed away
📌40+ reservoirs breached
📌220+ bridges collapsed
📌90% cropped damage
📌$10B loss to economy

#PakistanFloods
Let this sink in— one third of Pakistan is now underwater. The growing number of extreme weather events around the world is due to the planet’s rising temperatures, weather experts say.

3) Eight consecutive weeks of heavy rainfall. Killed 1,100 people, affected more than 33 million residents, wiped out 1 million homes and destroyed 2,200 miles of roads. Nearly 500,000 people are in displacement camps—countless others have nowhere to go.

⚠️UNKNOWN PNEUMONIA—Very worrisome—3 people have died, 9 people infected, of which 8 medical workers, are in hospital after developing a “pneumonia of unknown origin”—Argentinian authorities announced. Not COVID or flu. #ArgentinaPneumonia

2) Three people have died and five are in hospital after developing a “pneumonia of unknown origin”, Argentinian health authorities have announced.
According to the Ministry of Health in Tucumán – 9 people in the sameprivate clinic unit have contracted mystery pneumonia.
3) Authorities are concerned about the deadly outbreak because the usual suspects – including Covid, influenza and hantavirus – have been ruled out. 5 of the 6 affected, and both of those who so far died, are also health care workers, suggesting an infectious agent 👀

💡2x BOOSTER SAVES LIVES—New CDC data shown today shows that 2 booster shots ⬇️lowered #COVID19 death rates by 📌14x (purple line) vs unvaccinated—plus amazingly, 2 boosters ⬇️deaths 📌3x vs 1 booster alone (blue). CDC soon to approve #BA5/4 booster software update—get it please!
2) What shocks me is how people just hand wave “oh I don’t need 3x lower risk of dying with another shot” as if it’s nothing. Jeez people. Also vaccines lower risk of seeing #LongCovid too. Don’t be so stubborn.
3) New #BA5 and #BA4-targeting coronavirus booster shots has now gotten EUA from the FDA for all age 12+… thus second boosters now eligible for those 12-49 finally! CDC advisors voting soon. Rollout imminent within days. Please get boosted. Hope it’ll get EUA for kids <12 soon.

HOLY COW—At 49, May Peltola (D) will become the first Alaska Native to serve in Congress and the first woman to hold the Alaska House seat, defeating former Governor Sarah Palin! nytimes.com/live/2022/08/3…
Take a look at this… in first round, if you add Palin and Nick Begich together, there should be 58%. But even when the other R (Nick) was eliminated, Palin couldn’t go over 50% in second round. Basically 10% in first round who voted R defected to D in second round to avoid Palin
Really apologize for the typo - @MaryPeltola!!!

📍N95 MASKS WORK—"We found combination of a #N95 mask that passed a quantitative fit-test & portable #HEPA filter **provided near complete protection** against high viral aerosol loads at close range for prolonged periods of time"—while surgical did not. academic.oup.com/jid/article/22…
2) Damning—“Critically, surgical masks provided inadequate protection against skin and upper airway contamination, even when combined with HEPA filtration and at distances of 2.70 m."

Lesson—use #N95 masks, not just flimsy surgical masks. @projectn95
3) Please remember that #COVIDisAirborne — very much so. Which means faceshields and plexiglass are minimal benefit — and hence any health leader who still tells you to use them or tells you to not get N95 or KN95 or KF94– needs to get dismissed.
