Growing up in #Gambella, I have always been curious about the second-class citizen treatment the #Anuak people have always faced. We were never seen or treated equally with the rest of lighter skinned highlanders. The same thing could be 1/
said for the dark-skinned people of #Benishangul who have also faced genocide and mistreatments from the #TPLF and Derg regime. Why are the Nilotic treated differently in Ethiopia? This goes back to the Abyssinian Empire. During the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie in Ethiopia,2/
dark skin people including the Anuak, had faced kidnapping and they were forcefully taken to the capital Addis Ababa and other towns as slaves. This continued until the early twentieth century, when the #Anuak land and kingdom came under #British rule. The British abolished 3/
slavery till WW II. After the WW II ended, Gambella came under #Ethiopia again, and the slavery was restored. Even though, slavery became illegal in Ethiopia after Emperor Haile Selassie abolished it in 1942, the Anuak people were still treated as inferiors, and denied basic 4/
human rights such as education, healthcare, and most importantly, the right to live. The Anuak lands were rich and used by the #Ethiopian government for agricultural projects, without benefiting the local Anuak.
Under Derg regime in 1978, the project of “silence genocide” to 5/
wipe out the Anuak people had begun. This project included clearing the land of Anuak, constructing dams, the displacement of Anuak people from their ancestral lands, and the resettlement of the area by Ethiopian government. The Ethiopian government started to seize Anuak land 6/
for resettlement in 1981, which accelerated the rapid dwindling of the #Anuak population. Thus, the Anuak people fled to the bush, and tried to escape to #Sudan. The Ethiopian government murdered many Anuak people as they tried to move from one village to another. 7/
During the Ethiopian #civil war in 1974, the Anuak people were forcefully drafted into the Ethiopian army. The Anuak people refused to be involved in a war that was not a threat to the Anuak land. However, the security police at that time would search huts and schools for male 8/
Anuak, and herd them away. This kind of military recruitment by the Ethiopian government, left the Anuak people no choice but to fight back. The Anuak people stood up and defended themselves. They resisted with whatever weapons they had and made it clear that they would not 9/
be involved in a war with the “unknown enemies, and people who had done no harm to them.” This led to further repression by the Ethiopian government, and silent #genocide that was carried out increased in many ways. Here is to mention few ways:using Anuak men as shield during 10/
the deadly #Ethio-Somali and #Ethio-Eritrea war, resettlement program, and forced displacements. This was a silent genocide, and it was all about getting out the oil in the Anuak land and refine it in #Jimma. When the TPLF took over, they were not just using silent genocide no 11/
more, it became obvious when they brutally murdered the Anuak people on December 13, 2003. They used the same tactic that the so-called @EthioHRC is now using, which is by demonizing the people first and then commit a #genocide, followed by land grabbing 12/
and forced displacements. Their target was still the oil, and they were planning to refine it in #Mekelle. We, the Anuak, have suffered enough in Ethiopia. We didn’t choose to become a part of Ethiopia when the agreement was made neither were we consulted or involved. Our land 13/
was spitted apart without our knowledge! The PM @AbiyAhmedAli needs to understand that we will not keep silent no more. Whatever the @EthioHRC is cooking, we are ready for it. #Gambella people never went to #Oromia, the #OLF came, and we defended 14/
ourselves. If that is going to be the next reason to eliminate us, the #Nilotic, from #Ethiopia, let that be. But this time, we will not die like dogs, we will fight both inside and out until we are totally wiped out from the face of the earth by the #Ethiopian government. 15/
The #discrimination and #colorism we have always faced in #Ethiopia just got to the point where terrorists’ lives would be valued more than the peace-loving people of #Gambella. Just because of their skin color! SHAME! We allowed everyone to live peacefully with us. In fact, 16/
Gambella is the only region where anyone could go to and raise their family peacefully. We always defended #Ethiopia and died for it. But we are taken advantaged of! This is how we are treated because we have dark skin! Enough is Enough! We are not fools! Our lives matter! 17/
Thank you Seyoum Teshome for shining light in darkness! When a tree is very small, you can remove it using your hands without any challenges. But you are going to need something much bigger to cut down a grown big tree! Don’t wait until something becomes a national issue! 1/
It is only in #Ethiopia where refugees are allowed to leave the camps and live wherever they like, own weapons, and even getting recruited by terrorist organizations to fight the gov’t that’s taking care of them!
On June 26, about 13 #GLF members were captured in Tierkidi, 2/
Itang woreda. Among them was the Vice administrator named Gatdet, who was secretly working with the GLF terrorists while he was still in the gov’t system. According to Gatdet testimony, he’s not the only person working with the GLF terrorists, there are many officials from 3/
She is totally right! When you have a refugee population higher than the host community, you’ll have a problem! Leave alone the fact that those refugees are armed and are collaborating with Gatluak Buom who’s the leader of #GLF terrorist group. The #GoE should understand that 1/
Gatluak Boum is not fighting for any other reasons, but to make #Gambella an independent country, which fulfills the main and long term plan of creating the “Greater Naath country”. They’re not going back to S.Sudan! Those refugees are in the same boat with the TPLF: splitting 2/
Ethiopia into small countries! Even if TPLF is gone, this will stays a threat to the GoE. After few generations, this massive pop’n of refugees will blend in! If they don’t succeed military, with their pop’n, they will use “the constitution” in the future n create a country! 3/
It is sad and heartbreaking indeed! Instead of disarming the #GLF soldiers who are hiding with all their weapons in Cangkwaar, 01 Kebele (Newland), and Beherbereseboch around Donbosco area, the TPLF agents running #Gambella are disarming the very people who defeated…
the OLF invaders last time. Why are they only targeting the kebeles that most the Anuaks and Amhara lives? Frankly, these areas were the ones that the OLF attacked last time.I guess they’re giving their friends a good time to hide their weapons properly, and also paving the way…
for those terrorists again. We all know where the OLF and GLF are hiding and keeping their weapons. Instead of pursuing them, they did the opposite! Very well planned out! That is how you know that #TPLF is running #Gambella. I don’t know the sweet lies they feed the #Federal…
The numbers of OLF and GLF in Gambella town is concerning. What makes it very challenging is that they’re all blended in as civilians. They’re currently preparing by spying on the town, secretly smuggling and distributing weapons to their members in the city.1/
All peace loving citizens must do their duties and report any new moves. The safe haven places for the GLF terrorists in Gambella town are Beherbereseboch located around Donbosco, Newland, and Cangkwaar areas. These places are the safe haven for Gatluak Boum’s soldiers, 2/
and where all the weapons are kept. It is so sad that the government of Gambella is aware of this but they’re not doing anything. As a part of the preparation for a second attack, the OLF soldiers are not only in and around Gambella town but also reached to some places in the 3/
To some people, Meles Zenawi was the “savior” who transformed Ethiopia both politically and economically! But for many Ethiopian, he was the most brutal, heartless person who led the most evil party:TPLF. With all the blood in his hand, he is probably looking up from wherever 1/5
he’s now! May his soul Rest in Hell!
I still remember hiding in a room with more than fifty people, hearing gunshots and screaming. The smoke filled the sky, and the sun hid its light. December 13, 2003 will stay in the Anuak history books as the darkest day ever 2/5
This is the reason we will forever have TPLF as our #1 enemy, NOT our Tigerean brothers and sisters. No any human should be killed because of their ethnicity. Sadly, our innocent children of Tigray are the ones reaping the seeds of hate, brutally, genocide, oppression, 3/5
Let me be clear, I am not against refugees when I raise the issue of Gambella. I am just telling the truth: what’s going on in Gambella is not a refugee program, it’s a campaign to wipe out the local population!
Unlike Kenya, which host the largest refugee population in Africa,
the refugees in Gambella have more weapons than the local police; they have both South Sudanese and Ethiopian ID cards; they work in and control the government as “Ethiopian”and also hold refugee cards from the #UN. When there is a conflict, they use their guns to kill the local
..Anuak population, and the government takes no action to disarm them. The security of Gambella is control by the refugees, and refugee camps become the black market for selling illegal weapons. When they kill innocent old farmers and kids in Gambella, the town stays calm and..
