There have been many women who have won fame and praise for their courage and power. However, many of them have remained obscure names as not much has been written about them. One such woman is Khunza Humayun Shah, the mother of Chand Bibi.

While a number of biographies have been authored on her illustrious daughter, Chand Bibi, not a single book has been authored on the life and achievements of her great mother. She was a remarkable woman who had enjoyed influence during her husband’s reign and then herself ruled
Khunza Humayun Shah, who Ferishta mentions as the Khoonza Sultana, was the mother of Murtuza Nizam Shah, who was his regent for 6 years and during that period managed the afffairs of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate. Murtuza Nizam Shah was enthroned in 1565.
She is said to have raised her three brothers, Einul Mulk, Taj Khan and Etibar Khan to the highest rank of the nobility and ruled in the name of her son. She is set t have ruled with an iron hand and her brother usurping the powers of all other nobles.
She appointed Moolla Inayatullah as Prime Minister or Peshwa. In Ahmadnagar sultanate, peshwa, was word used for PM and Maratha kings started using it following Ahmadnagar traditions. Marathas were old time Ahmadnagar vassals n they were given high offices in Nizam Shahi courts.
Khunza Sultana, was the real sovereign of the sultanate. She said daily in durbar, transacting business, sending orders to the governors in different parts of the realm. She is said to no wear any purdah.
When Venkatadari, a Vijayanagar, minister was hardpressed by Bijapur Sultan and he sought Ahmanagar support, Khunza Humayun herself marched at the head of an army and forced Adil Shahis to retire.
As Khunza Sultana was always condemning the nobility and promoting her own brothers and other relatives, finally there was a backlash. Shah Jamaluddin Anju, Qasim Beg and others went to the young king and complained about his mother's conduct.
Murtaza Nizam Shah, who later became a cruel king and was called diwana, said, "the whole of my ministers are attached to teh Queen, how then I am to subvert her usurpd authority". To this the nobles said, that they would try to gain over a few nobles to their side to check her.
In the year 1569 the Queen marched against Bijapur geenral Kishwar Khan. When they reached Dhamungam, young king resolved to free himself from dowager queen and gained the support of top nobles.
He dispatched Hubbush Khn to inform the Queen that the King wishes that she should no longer engage in public affairs and live a retired life like other queens.
The Queen, enraged, summoned her supporters and marched from her palace on horseback fully armed. Nonetheless dowager queen was arrested after some resistance from her and her supporters. Finally in 1671 she was deposed and sent to a fort.
There was an attempt in 1569 to depose her. King's Quran teacher Maulana Husain Tabrezi convinced her son to allow him to hire mercenaries seize and depose her. The king first agreed, but then developed cold feet and told his mother.
However, for common people, it was from frying pan to fire, as Murtuza Nizam Shah is said to be the most cruel king that the Deccan has seen. While Chand Bibi’s name as regent is talked about a lot, no one knows Khunza Humayun.
While Chand Bibi, no doubt was a great woman, ruling for six years was no mean achievement for Khunza, Chand Bibi’s mother.
There is no denying the fact that Khunza Humayun was a remarkable woman. The author of Tarif-i Husain Shah Padshah-i Dakan, uses superlatives to describe the queen, her aura, beauty and also her ancestry, claiming that her ancestors came from Baghdad.
During her husband’s time too she had some say in the affairs of the state, though Hussain Nizam Shah, a very powerful king whose personal courage saw the victory of the Deccan Sultan in battle of Talikota and destruction of Vijaynagar King, wouldn’t allow much interference.

The Malabar rebellion of 1921 or #Moplah rebellion was launched #OTD in the year 1921, almost hundred years ago. The nation should celebrate this year as the 100th year of the uprising that saw mass uprising against the British colonial rule.

The uprising was against the British n its feudal supporters. The British had appointed high caste Hindus in positions of authority to get their support. They had facilitated the hassle-free British rule and any opposition to British was made out to be against their supporters.
There is no denying the fact that the Moplah rebellion was actually a peasant revolt against the colonial government. During the uprising, the rebels attacked various symbols and institutions of the colonial state, such as telegraph lines, train stations, courts and post offices.

#AlauddinKhilji ascended to throne #OTD, 19 July 1296 and remained in power for two decades. His reign lasted till 4th January 1316. His reign would be remembered for stability, rule of law, strong central leadership and a powerful standing army.

Political upheaval and his lack of administrative skills made it look unlikely that he would be able to rule for long. Initial years of his rule were spent in putting down one uprising after the other and taking on the Mongols who attacked India at least six times during his rule
Later, after repeated defeats, at the hands of Alauddin Khalji and his able generals, especially Zafar Khan, and after being hounded by Khalji generals in Lahore and Punjab who counter attacked Kabul on numerous occasions, Mongols didn’t dare to cross the Indus.

Vijayanagar Kingdom, after a spate of losses against Bahmani empire and after being tired of paying tributes to its powerful neighbor was now under pressure to come up with some strategy to defeat the Bahmnis.

The Vijayanagar kings and generals had lost to the Bahmani empire from the day one and despite a few small victories of their own, had always felt particularly weak to compete against the emperors first at Gulbarga and then Bidar.
Even in beginning of rule of Sultan Alauddin Ahmad II, he was handed down a crushing defeat by Bahmani army under the command of Muhammad Khan. He had to clear tributes for multiple years and had to gift hundreds of his best musicians, dancers and artists to their historic foes.

#Aurangabad has been renamed as Sambhaji Nagar. It was never associated with Sambhaji and had its origin in Nizamshahi Sultanate. It was a nondescript village before it was developed by Malik Ambar in 1610. After fall of Nizam Shāhī dynasty in 1633, city came under Mughal rule. Image
It was later renamed Aurangabad after it became the headquarters of #Aurangzeb during his viceroyalty over Deccan. The mausoleum complex of Bibi Ka Maqbara, an imitation of the Taj Mahal in Agra, was built in honour of his first wife, Dilras Banu Begum (died 1657).
Aurangabad remained the headquarters of the independent nizams (rulers), but it declined when the capital was moved to Hyderabad in Hyderabad princely state. With the dissolution of the princely state in 1948, Aurangabad was included in Hyderabad state in newly independent India.

Golconda Fort, #Hyderabad is a fortified citadel built by Qutb Shahi dynasty (1512–1687) as capital of the Golconda Sultanate. Because of the vicinity of diamond mines, especially Kollur Mine, Golconda flourished as a trade centre of large diamonds, known as Golconda Diamonds. ImageImage
Under Bahmani Sultanate, Golconda slowly rose to prominence. Sultan Quli Qutb-ul-Mulk sent by the Bahmanids as a governor at established it as seat of his govt around 1501. Sultan Quli formally became independent in 1518, establishing the Qutb Shahi dynasty based in Golconda.
Golconda consists of four distinct forts with a 10 km (6.2 mi) long outer wall with 87 semicircular bastions (some still mounted with cannons), eight gateways, and four drawbridges, with a number of royal apartments and halls, temples, mosques, magazines, stables, etc. inside.
