“You cannot have a LossAndDamage fund, if it doesn't deliver solidarity to those communities on the frontline that cannot adapt to #ClimateChange anymore. We are in need of international solidarity.” @mohadow@PowerShftAfrica
“There are currently three options: 1) We have a fund here, 2) Let´s talk about having a fund here 3) We don´t have a fund: let´s talk some more.” @YebSano@GreenpeaceSEA
“(...) this COP was never set up to succeed, but if it ends without agreeing to a #LossAndDamage fund it will be a resounding moral failure leaving the most vulnerable even more exposed. (...) will be laid at the feet of a handful of blocking countries.”@YebSano@GreenpeaceSEA
“We can either walk out of here with something tangible, especially on #LossAndDamage and #justtransition, to bring home to our communities after 30 years, or we can leave this #COP27, once again, with the same empty hands.” @catabreu_
We hear them saying: fossil fuels are needed to bring development and prosperity. But if they would really do so, they would have done so already. We need a #justtransition of energy and we need all countries to work together on this. @catabreu_
“To gain support, at this final stage of the negotiations, the EU needs to strengthen the inclusion of equity and recognise the historical responsibility of big emitters, bringing new and additional funds.” @MartinellChiara@CANEurope
As #COP29 nears its end, a packed CAN press conference heard how civil society is holding the line.
The stakes? Survival, justice, and humanity’s future.
Here’s why we’re fighting till the last hour. 🧵
2/ @lnacpil APMDD:
“We can’t understand how rich countries call themselves climate champions yet refuse to put a climate finance goal on the table. We are not going to accept a bad deal - it's preferable to fight for another deal than to be locked into a very bad deal..."
3/ "...we challenge the Global South to stand firm and hold the line. We have just hours left, but it's not a foregone conclusion.
🧵1/ 🌎 The #G77’s rejection of the climate finance text at #COP29 is a *make-or-break* moment that gives us an opportunity to push for a #ClimateFinance goal that’s truly fair and equitable.
Because when 80% of the world says "not enough," it’s time to listen. 👇
2/ Rebecca Thissen, Global 🌍Advocacy Lead at @CANIntl, said it straight: “The #NCQG (New Collective Quantified Goal) is *the* defining issue of COP29. It will shape the future of the Paris Agreement.”
And we can't kick this off with an unbalanced, inequitable deal. 💥
3/ 🌐 The G77 are making it clear that the text *misses critical needs.* They’re calling for $1.3 trillion of dollars per year – real, grant-based finance – to help the Global South cope with the climate crisis. Not loans. Not debt. Trillions. 💸
⚡ BREAKING: A record breaking number of fossil fuel lobbyists are at #COP28.
At least 2400 lobbyists are in Dubai to promote fossil fuels — almost a 400% increase from last year.
🧵thread below, which puts this shocking number into perspective:
@UNFCCC @UN @COP28_UAE @simonstiell Some facts about #COP28:
➡️ There are more fossil fuel lobbyists than delegates from the 10 most climate-vulnerable countries combined.
➡️ There are more than seven times the number of fossil fuel lobbyists than official Indigenous representatives.
#KickBigPollutersOut
@UNFCCC @UN @COP28_UAE @simonstiell You don’t bring arsonists to a firefighting convention — or the climate talks, for that matter — but that’s precisely what is happening here at #COP28.
Big Polluter interference in climate negotiations is costing millions of people their homes, livelihoods & lives.
.#COP27 will end in hours/days🤔and the new cover text draft did reduce in length.
BUT what we cannot accept is the continued exclusion of priorities of vulnerable countries and the backsliding on the Glasgow Pact - this process must always be moving us forward!
CAN’s reaction⬇️
2/9 The #COP27 Cover Decision must include language on the equitable phase-out of ALL fossil fuels - coal, oil, AND gas.
A huge number of countries demanded this and the Egyptian Presidency must stop ignoring it.
3/9 Parties must avoid using qualifiers and loopholes such as “(un)abated”, “rationalize”, “inefficient”, “low carbon”, and “diversification of energy” which weaken commitments to the phasing-out of #FossilFuels and fossil fuel subsidies in the cover decision.
