📌#COP27 is over. So much happened over past 3 weeks at & around the COP…
👀Time to look back / to look forward
Here is a thread of threads to review the good, the bad & the ugly in relation to key aspects of COP27, by some of the most astute observers of the process
🧵1/12
2/ Before delving in specific policy developments, one must take a step back & remember stakes and expectations from the broader community, esp. after decades of procrastination by decision makers.
Luckily @vanessa_vash set the context right before #COP27
3/ 2022 was also a year of big scientific reports that were expected to remind us all of desperate urgency to take rapid action against root causes of climate emergency as well as to deal with existing impacts.
@KHayhoe has a great pool metaphor for you
4/ So did #COP27 achieve anything? Let’s start with the breakthrough on #LossAndDamage: governments agreed to establish a financial mechanism to channel funds to those most impacted, as explained brilliantly by @LossAndDamage here:
5/ Now, if you want to understand more about the politics behind this and why the outcome constitutes a real testimony of the strength of G77 unity, I invite you to turn to @n_thanki no BS analysis of these developments
6/ Countries also made progress to strengthen the delivery of guidance to deal with ongoing climate-related #LossAndDamage through the “Santiago Network on Loss and Damage” which is now mandated to take into account human rights in its work
7/ But as the representative from Bangladesh said during a plenary: no matter how strong institutions established to deal with climate-related #LossAndDamage are, there wont be any prospect for #ClimateJustice if governments continue to accelerate the crisis at the same time
8/ Hence the need to review whether #COP27 moved needle towards tackling effectively primary cause of climate harms: fossil fuels related emissions. While COP failed to recognize this need explicitly, @CatAbreu stresses momentum building
9/ But COP also saw corporate lobbyists & their governmental sponsors work to promote
false solutions (geoengineering, carbon trading) to keep the #FossilFuels industry on life support, esp. with loopholes planted in various negotiating texts. My analysis:
10/ in particular, CCS was all over the place at #COP27 as governments & companies tried to expand this smoke screen to cover up for the lack of actual action to reduce emissions.
@KetanJ0 has a massive thread for you if you want more:
11/ Never before had #HumanRights been so present at a climate COP. Wide networks grounded their demands on #ClimateJustice & human rights. Many #COP27 participants faced an intolerable level of intimidation & harassment
12/ so many other analysis and threads deserve attention and this thread of threads is clearly not comprehensive. Please share in comments to this post the threads that you find most informative about the #COP27 and its outcomes...

🚨a wide set of #COP27 decisions is now distributed and once again the #ParisAgreement is used to advance false solutions promoting the status quo rather than accelerating radically the race to phase out fossil fuels... A overview of some key problematic decisions...
🧵1/ Image
2/ 🎩cover decisions: despite some good language on #Renewables, the #COP27 political outcome makes no progress on recognition of need to phase out ALL fossil fuels & only replicate Glasgow language without any recognition of ongoing #FossilFuels crisis
unfccc.int/documents/6243… Image
3/🤡 cover decision also reuses language suggesting that coal emissions might be "abated" through future technologies - this language diverts away from unequivocal demand for an effective phasing out of all fossil fuels in line with science

🚨🆕 #COP27 presidency draft of political decisions:
This proposal appears to be more a cover up than a proposal for cover decisions!
🔥We live in a #FossilFuels crisis, yet draft text:
⚠️fails to call for a phase out of #FossilFuels
⚠️actually opens door for status quo
short🧵 Image
2/ ⚡️good language on need for clean & just transition to renewable energy and to scaling up solar - but reference to "all available clean & efficient energy technologies" aims at allowing continuation of some #FossilFuels disguised as climate solutions Image
3/ ⚠️despite many parties calling for reference to ALL #FossilFuels - incl. small Islands, India, many European States, current draft only focuses on coal power thus failing to call out need to phase out gas and oil despite science/IPCC highlighting the need for it Image

📰 BREAKING: the Sustainable Development Mechanism has been suspended from Twitter for impersonating a real climate solution.
#COP27 (🧵a short thread)
ℹ️More background: on the eve of #COP27,a technical body established under #ParisAgreement released 1st recommendations to operationalise #CarbonTrading under #ParisAgreement after rushed negotiations.
The recommendation is marred with dangerous flaws.
2/7
🗣️Civil society coalitions expressed strong concerns as the recommendation:
🔻undermines #HumanRights safeguards
🔻threatens #ParisAgreement integrity & ambition
🔻opens door for dangerous technofixes while delaying #FossilFuels phaseout... 3/7

🔥🙈#COP27 barely started & recommendations are already adopted that would seriously undermine the integrity of the #ParisAgreement
Last night, the supervisory body on #carbonmarkets finalised recommendations regarding "removals"
3⃣ things to know about this outcome...
🧵[1/7]
2/7 decision adopted in middle of night makes clear that Supervisory Body is pressing forward opening the door for a wide range of “removals” incl. engineering of the oceans to “offset” emissions despite the existence of an international moratorium prohibiting this
3/7 Despite the multiple cases of #HumanRights violations resulting from previous market-based “offsetting” schemes–the Supervisory Body suggest that enforcement of environmental and social safeguards shld remain a prerogative of host country–thus making any safeguards toothless

SpecialRapporteurs demand that States:
🛑🛢️urgently step up mitigation in line w. equity – incl. ending #FossilFuels expansion, regulating businesses & strengthening access to courts
