Princeton economist, @nytimes columnist, and Biden administration flunkey @paulkrugman has posted a column titled, "How China Lost the Covid War." It is a devastating self-exposure of the intellectual, political and moral disintegration of American liberalism. #COVID19 1/
Krugman defines winning the Covid War as accepting mass death and illness. The United States and Europe, he writes, "are more or less getting back to normal life." That is, they have abandoned any systematic effort to stop a pandemic that is infecting millions daily. 2/
China, Krugman claims, has lost the Covid War because it resisted the spread of infection and kept the number of deaths over the last three years to an infinitesimal fraction of US and European fatalities. 3/
Krugman describes China's avoidance of mass death - at least up until now - as a "debacle" from which lessons must be drawn. What are the lessons? 4/
"Crucially, the lesson is not that we shouldn’t pursue public health measures in the face of a pandemic. Sometimes such measures are necessary." SOMETIMES?! In other words, public health measures should be viewed as exceptional, and abandoned as quickly as possible. 5/
Justifying the US decision to subordinate public health policy to capitalist economic interests, Krugman states: "It was never realistic to imagine that mask mandates and even lockdowns could prevent the coronavirus from spreading." This is absolutely false. 6/
In fact, China's response to the pandemic proved that basic and well-known public health measures - contact tracing, mass testing, masking and lockdowns - could effectively prevent viral transmission and save lives. 7/
Krugman cites New Zealand's decision to abandon its policy of #ZeroCovid in late 2021 as an example of what China should have done; that is, give up efforts to stop COVID transmission and rely exclusively on vaccinations. 8/
But Krugman acknowledges that New Zealand's shift to the US strategy had serious consequences. 9/
"Even with vaccines, opening up led to a large rise in cases and deaths — but not nearly as severe as would have happened if these places had opened up earlier, so that overall deaths per capita have been far lower than in the United States." 10/
Krugman asserts: "China’s leaders, however, seem to have believed that lockdowns could permanently stomp out the coronavirus, and they have been acting as if they still believe this even in the face of overwhelming contrary evidence." 11/
Krugman fails to cite this "overwhelming evidence." In fact, real life evidence proves overwhelmingly that the rapid implementation of public health measures can stop the spread of COVID. 12/
The tragic situation confronting China is that its efforts to contain the pandemic have been relentlessly undermined by the decision of the US and Western Europe, in the words of former British PM Boris Johnson, to "let the bodies pile high." 13/
China's basic miscalculation has been its dependence on national measures - however correct in themselves - to stop the spread of a virus whose elimination and eradication requires globally coordinated public health measures. 14/
Xi Jinping's regime is not, as Krugman asserts, "in a trap of its own making." Its dilemma is derived from the global spread of COVID and relentless international geopolitical and economic pressures, above all those emanating from the United States. 15/
Krugman's column exhibits a staggering level of ignorance about the nature of COVID and the escalating public health crisis. He writes that "few Chinese have natural immunity." 16/
Well here's some news for Professor Krugman: Even people with vaccinations - whose efficacy wanes over months - are vulnerable to repeated infections and severe illness. #LongCovid is an ongoing and worsening mass disabling event. 17/
There is growing evidence that the recurrence of infection carries the danger of significant damage to critical organ systems, resulting in the reduction of life expectancy. 18/
Finally, Krugman claims that the US response to COVID, when contrasted to China's policy of #ZeroCovid, proves the superiority of "democracy" over "autocracy." 19/
Krugman may believe that the decision of the Trump and Biden administrations to prioritize economic interests and accept more than one million US deaths was the right one. 20/
But what he is defending is not "democracy," but the rule of a ruthless financial oligarchy that is contemptuous of human life and the welfare of the people. 21/21

The @NYTimes - which called as far back as March 2020 for a "herd immunity" response to #COVID19 and has promoted the fabricated Wuhan Lab conspiracy theory - is enthusiastically reporting demonstrations in China against #ZeroCovid. 1/ #ChinaProtests
instagram.com/reel/ClguoYhgx…
The NYTimes video highlights the slogan, "No P.C.R. test. We want freedom!" Freedom from what? Freedom to transmit disease? Freedom to infect elderly people and kill them? Freedom from social responsibility? Freedom to "have fun" whatever the consequences? 2/
To the extent that these demonstrations are denouncing essential measures necessary to stop #Covid transmission, they are politically reactionary and deserve no support. The videos indicate that the protesters are drawn from the middle class. 3/

Today I visited the National Covid Memorial Wall in London. It conveys the enormous scale of the human loss. Each heart on the wall, which stretches for 1/3 of a mile, represents one of the more than 200,000 people who have died of #COVID19 in the UK. #pandemic 1/
Thousands of the hearts include the handwritten names of the deceased, with profoundly moving expressions of the grief felt by their bereaved families. The wall is the record of an immense human tragedy, 2/
But it is also a record of a monstrous crime against humanity. Across from the wall, separated by the River Thames, looms the Houses of Parliament. There sit the politicians who implemented the disastrous herd immunity policies responsible for horrifying loss of life. 3/

The campaign to force the cancellation of @rogerwaters' upcoming German concerts is escalating. The latest vicious denunciation of the artist comes from Jürgen Kaube of the Frankfurter Allegemeine. The journalist's denunciation of Waters as anti-Semitic is not only a lie. 1/ Image
It is also utterly cynical. Kaube has been a vociferous defender of German academia's most prominent apologist for Adolf Hitler, Professor Jörg Baberowski of Humboldt University. In a 2014 interview with the Spiegel magazine, Baberowski declared: 2/
“Hitler was no psychopath, and he wasn’t vicious. He didn’t want people to talk about the extermination of the Jews at his table.” At the time, Kaube did not call for Baberowski's removal from Humboldt University. Just the opposite. 3/

Exactly 100 years ago, on October 20, 1922, #Trotsky delivered one of his great political speeches before the membership of the Moscow organization of the Russian Communist Party. It was an extraordinary analysis of the challenges confronting the new Communist International. 1/
Trotsky examined the contradictory development of the world socialist revolution, which had achieved its first great victory in backward Russia rather than in the advanced centers of world imperialism. 2/ #socialism
He noted a basic difference in the revolutionary process in Russia, compared to that in an advanced country such as the United States. In the former, the great problem was not the seizure of power, but in holding it in the aftermath of the overthrow of the capitalist state. 3/

That a federal jury in Manhattan needed only 90 minutes to rule in actor #KevinSpacey's favor exposes the non-existence of credible evidence supporting accuser Anthony Rapp's claim that he was sexually assaulted by Spacey 36 years ago. 1/
But Rapp's claims, first made in 2017 in the early days of the rapidly escalating #MeToo witch-hunt, were sufficient to destroy the career of one of the greatest contemporary American actors. The media, led by the #NYTimes, treated untested accusations as proof of guilt. 2/
Spacey's career was brought to an immediate end. He was removed from "House of Cards" and fired from his starring role in "All the Money in the World." The outcome of the trial has vindicated the principled stand taken by the WSWS against the witch-hunt. 3/

Entering the new week, the #UkraineRussiaWar️ is escalating relentlessly. The @NYTimes reports explosions in the Russian region of Belgorod, well north of the Ukraine border. The city of Belgorod is an 8.5 hour drive from Moscow. US-NATO is extending the war into Russia. 1/
Both NATO and Russia are holding nuclear exercises. The NATO exercise, #steadfastnoon, starts Monday, involving 14 countries and 60 aircraft, including US B-52 bombers from Minot Air Base in North Dakota. The flights will be over Belgium, Britain and the North Sea. 2/
NATO describes the exercises as "routine," as if there could be anything routine about a nuclear exercise in the midst of a war that could lead, according to President Biden, to a nuclear #armagedon. In the meantime, Russia is going ahead with its "Grom" nuclear drill. 3/
