Bulgarian authorities question reporter and editor about sources
cpj.org/2022/12/bulgar…
#Bulgaria: Prosecutors summoned journalists Alexei Lazarov & Desislava Nikolova for questioning regarding allegations of drug markups in state-owned hospitals that were published in @capitalbg. Nikolova was asked about the source of an internal Ministry of Health report she cited
#Bulgaria: Police said they were considering a criminal investigation into the practices described in the article, but focused questions on where @capitalbg got its information. The two journalists declined to answer, citing their journalistic right to protect their sources.
“Bulgarian authorities must stop pressuring Alexei Lazarov and Desislava Nikolova for information about the sources for their reporting,” said @attilamong, @CPJ_Eurasia's Europe representative.

cpj.org/2022/12/bulgar…
“Journalists who investigate potential irregularities in public spending do their work in the interest of the public, and to subject them to questioning in this way is simply intimidation,” said @attilamong, @CPJ_Eurasia's Europe representative.

Like spyware, forensic tools can access everything on a phone or computer, but unlike spyware, such tools are in widespread, open usage in democracies as well as more repressive regimes.

It’s become routine for authorities to take phones and computers into custody when they are investigating a journalist.

CPJ’s 2022 prison census lists examples from Iran, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Vietnam, India, and Russia.

In October, CPJ wrote about the legal battle to protect slain American reporter Jeff German’s electronic devices—and why it’s so concerning for #pressfreedom

cpj.org/2022/12/senega…
“The fact that journalist Pape Alé Niang is no longer in a jail cell in #Senegal is small relief given the stifling bail conditions placed on him,” said @angelaquintal, @CPJAfrica program coordinator.

cpj.org/2022/12/senega…
“[#Senegal] authorities must combat the erosion of Senegal’s democracy by dropping all legal proceedings against Pape Alé Niang & reforming the country’s laws to ensure journalism is not criminalized,” said @angelaquintal, @CPJAfrica program coordinator.

In an Iran roiled by protests, journalists face a war of attrition — by @YeganehSalehi

cpj.org/2022/12/in-an-…

#Iran today:
-Journalists’ families intimidated into remaining silent
