1/Where is rest of #January6thReport?

Trump & his fellow insurrectionist leaders deserved condemnation & criminal referral for their actions/inactions that led to #January6th riots.

But we expected this Committee to evaluate everything that contributed to that undemocratic day.
2/@January6thCmte had daunting task. Attacked relentlessly bc of politics. @HouseGOP declined involvement to its discredit. Two @GOP Members @RepLizCheney @RepKinzinger served to their credit & political downfall (short-term at least).

Entire effort should have been nonpartisan.
3/But we - Americans - deserved to also learn abt federal govt shortcomings & why we were not better prepared for events like #January6th. This was weak link in armor & democracy is only as strong as weakest link.

Where does blame lie all around?
4/Majority of report is abt Trump, his insurrectionist co-conspirators & criminals who fulfilled his wishes.

january6th.house.gov/sites/democrat…

692 pages. This result is to be applauded.

But there are noticeable & important gaps.
5/Appendix 1 covers govt preparation & response to #January6 in just over 30 pages. It barely skims the surface of what really went on or didn't happen in individual agencies.
6/@January6thCmte couldn't even properly identify @FBI instead calling it "Federal Bureau of Intelligence". 🤦‍♂️

But let's focus on @DHSgov Office of Intelligence & Analysis (DHS I&A) on which I know something about.
7/My firm & @wbaidlaw rep'd #BrianMurphy, Acting DHS Undersecretary for I&A until Summer 2020 & highest ranking #whistleblower in modern history, when he was removed by #ChadWolf.

This office has responsibilities for ensuring our homeland is safe.

nytimes.com/2020/09/11/us/…
8/When Murphy was removed in retaliation for being #WBer, #JoeMaher replaced him. Maher was in charge of @DHSgov I&A on #January6.

Was Maher ever interviewed by @January6thCmte? Logical person to question.

I searched the report for mention of his name. I found it once.
9/He is fourth name on Committee staff & was put there by @RepLizCheney bc #Maher as relationship w/her husband @PhilipPerry who was formerly @DHSgov General Counsel & worked w/Maher.
10/We publicly raised this as issue. At minimum, horrible appearance of conflict. At worst, total cover-up.

I personally discussed matter w/at least one Member of Committee who knew nothing abt how #Maher was hired.

nytimes.com/2021/08/11/us/…
11/We thought #Maher wld be sent back to DHS. Certainly @BennieGThompson wld recognize legitimacy of concerns. But apparently pleasing @RepLizCheney was more important. I even had friends of theirs call me to try & dissuade me from pushing this issue.

vice.com/en/article/g5g…
END/I hoped @January6thCmte wld surmount typical DC problems but while I applaud its work (& rep'd several witnesses before it), it fell short in my eyes of achieving what was a necessary & needed objective of transparency & complete truth to help our country move forward & grow.

1/It is always positive when greater transparency occurs so citizenry can learn more abt our govt & history. I have worked to secure release of #JFKAssassination docs for 30+ yrs.

Reading these records is truly fascinating window into past. But no one should expect "smoking gun"
2/What was released today provides researchers & historians fodder to conduct countless months of analysis. While nothing will move needle on what transpired on Nov 22, 1963, small nuggets will emerge to help put pieces of puzzle together so that time period is better understood.
3/@USNatArchives release also reveals problems that plague declassification: inconsistency. For example, record #104-10065-10359 contains list of @CIA officers who served in Moscow 1959-1963:
archives.gov/files/research…
Name of officer who served from 26 Jun - 14 Dec 62 is redacted.

Dec 21st will be 34 years. I remember day vividly & I've rep'd victims' families for nearly 30 years. I applaud US dedication to accountability but true justice will ultimately require US/UK to reveal all that it knows. Too many past opportunities missed. nyti.ms/3Br8Vmz
Here is op-ed I penned for @thedailybeast for #PanAm103 30th anniversary.

Here is op-ed I penned for 25th anniversary of #PanAm103 for @FoxNews.

Sadly remarkably similar to the one I would write 5 years later.

1/I am saddened to learn of the death of my friend #DavidLifton (1939-2022) whose #JFKassassination book "Best Evidence" caused quite the stir when it was published in 1981. Image
2/David was the 1st JFK author I got to know almost 40 years ago when I called him out of the blue while still in HS. While I do not subscribe to David's theories, I always found him to be friendly and easy to get along with and we stayed in contact throughout all these years.
3/I even once went to the @USNatArchives on his behalf to view the original journal of #LeeHarveyOswald which he kept while in the Soviet Union. It was quite an experience to handle the document in person and it required wearing white gloves!

1/I applaud work of @January6thCmte & everything it has uncovered. Incredibly important effort & one that should - if powers permit - continue into next Congress.

But I have serious questions regarding whether it has pursued all possible leads/inquiries.

And media should ask.
2/According to March 4 report from @DHSOIG, @DHSgov Office of Intelligence & Analysis “identified specific threat information related to the events on Jan. 6, 2021, but did not issue any intelligence products about these threats until Jan. 8, 2021."

Well, what abt #JosephMaher?
3/#JosephMaher is senior staff member on @January6thCmte.

On January 6th he was Acting Dir of that same @DHS Office that failed to do its job.

We raised concerns last year re: conflict of interest to no avail. He stayed in his Committee assignment.
