Today pridie kalendas Ianuarias MMDCCLXXV AUC I offer up some posts/threads/links of philological interest I have lately seen. They are *not* ranked. Maybe I add to in new year. Said #philology is very BROAD church in the truest sense. Please, enjoy 🧵
1. Lovely little podcast with @OlaWikander which gives great example led discussion of the study on ancient langs/cultures. At the very least listen to his exegesis on his specialty, Ugaritic.
2. Here is @DrMichaelBonner (yes, another podcast). Worth listening to as he is a practicing philologist beyond the academy
3. I could spam from @AntigoneJournal but I shan't. This focuses on how #Latin and #Greek (and Anatolian, Indo-Iranian...) elucidate one another, without getting too technical.
4. Another from @AntigoneJournal this one does A LOT more than the title suggests: #language , #linguistics (philology, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics..), #literature & #culture
5. This from @ActualAurochs is a wonderful tisane against the cranks and psychodeviants who are drawn to #Arthuriana. It gets the mix of rigour and whimsy right. Excellent close/slow reading.
6. I am reluctant to add to the noise more on #ReceptioGate because it has gone from #philology in real time to the typical backbiting and bloodletting one expects from micropsychoi academics, but this is a good read
7. These two threads on med Latin are salutatory. Remind me of the excellent discussion last year (two years ago?) on decolonisation and Ethiopic (you know the one...): facta non verba, lupae! (quoque pauca verba, ignoscite...)
8. Here is modern day Merlin @DrFrancisYoung on the strange familiarities of #medieval #Christianity and Paganism. Absolutely sober take but entertaining nevertheless
9. When I read this piece (admittedly the most technical here) by @thesaurosaur on a papyri find I felt a frankly obscene thrill of excitement. Now you can too.
10. *your suggestion here*. Remember chaps and chapettes, anything broadchurch philology, from laryngeals to literature, (h)aspirations to history...what have you read/listened to lately? Today is pridie kalendas Ianuarias MMDCCLXXV AUC and I have been your host.
