Jailed #Kashmiri activist Khurram Parvez, 45, is one of 3 “outstanding activists” who will receive the @martinennals award for 2023, it was announced today in Geneva

Jailed without trial for 423 days now & currently in a Delhi prison, Parvez faces 8 criminal charges, including of aiding terrorism & “waging war”. Punishment, if convicted, can stretch to life imprisonment.

Parvez founded the Jammu & Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) & is Chair of the Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances. The JKCCS has not been functional since 2020, when it was raided by #NIA

On 14 September 2016, Parvez was prevented from travelling to a UN Human Rights Council Session in Geneva. 8 days later, he was detained for 76 days under the Public Safety Act (PSA), 2016, a law that allows detention without charge for 2 years

While quashing his detention under the PSA, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court on 25 November 2016 called his detention “illegal” and said that the “detaining authority has abused its powers”, referring in this case to the district magistrate

On 28 Oct 2020, the NIA raided the JKCCS & Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons, in a case concerning NGOs & trusts “raising funds in India & abroad in the name of charitable activities” & then “using those funds” for “secessionist and separatist activities” in J&K
