Parvez founded the Jammu & Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) & is Chair of the Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances. The JKCCS has not been functional since 2020, when it was raided by #NIA
4/10
Winner of 2 global human rights awards in 20016 & 2016, Parvez was the driving force behind the JKCCS, whose reports over the last 2 decades sparked criticism of #India’s human-rights records in #Kashmir
5/10
United Nations' Special Rapporteur @MaryLawlorhrds in Nov 2021 said of Parvez: "He's not a terrorist, he's a human rights defender."
Former UN Special Rapporteur, David Kaye described his arrest as “another extraordinary abuse” in Kashmir.
6/10
On 14 September 2016, Parvez was prevented from travelling to a UN Human Rights Council Session in Geneva. 8 days later, he was detained for 76 days under the Public Safety Act (PSA), 2016, a law that allows detention without charge for 2 years
7/10
While quashing his detention under the PSA, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court on 25 November 2016 called his detention “illegal” and said that the “detaining authority has abused its powers”, referring in this case to the district magistrate
8/10
On 28 Oct 2020, the NIA raided the JKCCS & Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons, in a case concerning NGOs & trusts “raising funds in India & abroad in the name of charitable activities” & then “using those funds” for “secessionist and separatist activities” in J&K
9/10
FIR against Parvez lists criminal conspiracy, waging war under the IPC & #UAPA sections 17 (raising funds for terrorist act), 18 (conspiracy), 18B (recruiting for terrorist act), 38 (membership of a terrorist organisation) & 40 (raising fund for a terrorist organisation)

Contending—without explaining how—that it overlapped with other scholarships, #Modi govt in Dec 2022 ended fellowships for minority MPhil, PhD students. As @ainulrhbr & @ArshiiQureshi report, this overlap isn’t possible & reveals a larger trend.

2/12
The demise of the 13-yr-old Maulana Azad Fellowships is one of a series of moves by the #Modi govt to end, reduce or make it difficult to access financial assistance to minority communities, in particular to #Muslims.

"Since about the early 1990s, an Indian elite, which lives first world lives, has set the domestic narrative in the media and politics. A corresponding group in the first world has echoed that narrative."
"While most analysts concede that we need a better education system, they rarely focus on the enormity of the task; they are satisfied that most Indians have acquired basic literacy, not recognizing that the nations we compete with have set the bar much higher."

article-14.com/post/the-flawe…
