@ABDanielleSmith

Let's do some education on contraception here. A thread (that I doubt you will ever read but here I go)

#abhealth #abpoli #ableg
1. Universal coverage of contraception is not a subsidy to insurance companies. Insurance companies only cover a percentage of meds, rarely 100%. There is still pay out of pocket costs, and for young women, even this small cost isn't always affordable
2. IUDs can be up to $500. Insurance companies will only pay for 1 per year. So if it falls out, gets embedded, there's side effects, etc, they can't get another through insurance for at least a year. This usually falls on the doctor to find a "free" one
3. Let's talk about "free IUDs". They are increasingly difficult to get for docs. We try online lottery systems and we beg drug reps. I ask patients if I can keep their unopened IUD if they happen to have one and then not use it (pregnancy, etc). It's so difficult to get them
4. Oh and Nexplanon isn't really covered by any company and could be a huge benefit for our patients with hx of trauma, sexual assault or other reasons where a pelvic exam is inappropriate. It's rarely an option though and it should be
5. For our most vulnerable, like the houseless or suffering with addiction, the process of finding a doctor, getting the prescription, going to the pharmacy every 3 mo and taking a pill everyday is truly impossible. Universal coverage is one step removed for them
6. Also, obvious fact here but so many patients do NOT have private coverage!!! Many of them are young women or AFAB who are working part time jobs with no support. They don't qualify for low income blue cross and they can't afford to pay for blue cross private plans.
7. And you know what's more expensive than universal contraception coverage?

Tax payers supporting unplanned pregnancies, whether the pregnancy is kept or not

And an IUD is cheaper than the cost of an abortion to the healthcare system.

'Nuff said
So @Alberta_UCP & Danielle: Supporting universal contraception is not only logistically & financially intelligent, it's also the right ethical choice

You are turning it down due to your entrenched conservative moral values, admit it. This has nothing to do with insurance.
@JanisIrwin #InternationalWomensDay

Oh p.s: remove the tax on menstrual products too. Make those free as well. I recently removed a NAPKIN from a patient because she couldn't buy a pad or tampon.

Let's give women/individuals AFAB their dignity back please.
An addendum for @ABDanielleSmith: Did you know non group Blue Cross isn't free? It's $63.50/mo for an individual & $118/mo for a family. So for a single mom, you're asking her to choose btwn Blue Cross so she can take her daily pill or her groceries for the kids. Just FYI.

Constitutional law experts, correct me if I'm wrong, but am I reading that @ABDanielleSmith's Sovereignty Act allows the @Alberta_UCP to theoretically force Alberta Health/AHS to do any of the following, without it going through the legislature:

#abpoli #ableg
1. Delist and defund abortions, and quite possibly make it illegal for providers to perform them, as they could theoretically disagree with the Supreme Court's R v. Morgentaler?
2. Force all AHS hospitals and the CPSA to remove any masking policies in facilities or clinics because they don't agree with COVID masking recommendations (maybe they can do this anyway without this law right now, but have chosen not to...yet)

In the latest edition of "What the ***** did @ABDanielleSmith just say?!", we have this hot off the press. When @Albertadoctors asked her how #Alberta will ensure all citizens have access to quality care, we have this quote from her:

1/10
"l understand we have 11,000 doctors in the province. I have been told each GP should be able to have a patient panel of 1500 patients. This is clearly not occurring....

2/10
"...For whatever reason, it appears that GPs are not wanting to have this patient load otherwise we wouldn’t have the problem we have"

Okay let's talk about this Danielle. It will be short and sweet.

Reasons why my 6 month old baby was vaccinated for #COVID19 today, a thread by a mom and a doctor.

Read on...🧵

1/9
1. Safety: The Moderna vaccine was tested on over 11 000 kids and they found no 'red flag' side effects. The usual was seen like a sore limb or fussing/crying. But even more serious side effects in older age groups, like Myocarditis, was not found in under 5 yrs old

2/9
2. Efficacy: The vaccine isn't as effective against the new variants, it's true. However in the 6mo - 2 yrs group, it had about 51% efficacy against Omicron variants. That's similar to some years of the flu vaccine & we know the flu vax helps reduce severity & spread

I accepted transfer of 2 patients from #YEG ER depts to the facility I work at so they can get appropriate care for their medical issues & offload ER volumes.

Its been 36hrs.

They aren't here & there's no ETA

Because there is no EMS to transport them.

This. Is. A. Crisis.
So tell me again why you think we should allow one of the most incompetent & destructive governments in #Alberta's history to lead us again for another 4 yrs? Because all the @Alberta_UCP has done for this province is burn #abhealth to the ground.

#abpoli #ableg
Update: 1 of 2 patients arrived last night, 40hrs after accepting the patient for transfer.

Patient #2 still waiting.

Dear @Alberta_UCP voters registering in the thousands for the leadership vote, heed my warning: Kicking out @jkenney will not save this province. Replacing him w/@BrianJeanAB will not undo the damage of the last 3yrs.

If you vote UCP again, there will be dire consequences. 1/7
I watched excellent doctors leave in 2020 due to the UCP fight w/doctors. But these were only the docs who were given opportunities to leave & weren't easily tied to this province. The rest of us stayed behind and fought b/c leaving wasn't so simple & we hoped for change 2/7
However, every doctor I've spoken to, from the wealthiest specialist to the part time Family Doc, has said they have discussed/thought of an exit plan from this province if this govt remains in power. We are too demoralized by how the UCP handled this pandemic & we are done 3/7

Let's talk about the hatred towards Trudeau a little bit here. I doubt this Tweet will get much attention but I want to air this frustration I have, particularly with #Albertans over the age of 50 who are triggered into rage everytime you say "Trudeau".

TLDR: Get over it

🧵 1/x
I grew up in a conservative home, surrounded by those who worked in O&G and saw the fall out of the National Energy Program. I have heard the stories over & over of the economic collapse it created in Alberta.

I have been raised with the dogma that Trudeau = Satan

2/x
Justin Trudeau arrived and this man was doomed from Day 1 in Alberta. How many times have I heard "he's a draaammmma teacher 🙄", and yet these same people voted in a Bible college dropout?
