From all of us at NCCM, we wish you and all your loved ones a joyous Ramadan Mubarak.
This Ramadan, let's pave a path to justice together.
Throughout this Ramadan, we will tell you about the many ways we are working towards a more just future for our communities at NCCM. After hearing from so many of you, we will be laying out a collective vision.
For a more just education system for our children.
For governments and laws free of #Islamophobia and discrimination.
For public spaces where we can walk freely without fear.
For brave and courageous foreign policy.
For our freedom to be #Muslim no matter where we are.
Be a part of paving this path, be a part of making this future a reality.
No step on this journey is possible without your dua’s and support.
This week, many of us started Ramadan with the news of Ahmed, a young man in #Ottawa, being berated by a guard associated with @VIA_Rail, for praying inside a train station.
The right to worship freely is a cornerstone of Canadian society and democracy. The guard's actions amounted to blatant #Islamophobia.
We got involved to help Ahmed. We made it clear to VIA Rail and other authorities that the incident is indicative of systemic #Islamophobia. Real solutions are needed.
1/4. You probably saw what happened to Ahmed, a young man who was berated recently for praying inside Ottawa's VIA Rail station, by a guard associated with the latter.
2/4. Today, after the tireless work of our legal team, journalists, and advocacy team, we are happy to say that @VIA_Rail has committed to real change and to work with NCCM to build a fulsome process to combat Islamophobia in the future.
3/4. This is one of hundreds of files we work on, just for our legal department.
Our teams are all oversubscribed and beyond capacity.
1/6. The government of #India's media and Internet blackout in Punjab (home to a large Sikh population) should not be tolerated by the international community.
It's time #Ottawa takes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to task for this.
2/6. This is not the first time the #BJP government has engaged in egregiously undemocratic behaviour - the ongoing human rights violations and atrocities in Kashmir are just one example.
3/6. The #BJP is an extension of the Hindutva nationalist org, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which wants to shape #India into a country run by and for its Hindu majority.
Earlier this month, we were made aware of a disturbing incident of a student desecrating the Quran at a public school in the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board. @kprschools
We have been working closely with impacted communities to address serious ongoing issues at the school and board levels.
Last night, we met with the @kprschools alongside community members to ask for change. Courageous #Muslim students spoke about their experiences and have been pushing for change. It was exceedingly clear that the current situation is unacceptable.
1/7. NCCM and the CCLA (@cancivlib), alongside allies, are at the #Quebec Court of Appeal today to challenge #Bill21, the law that bars certain public servants from wearing religious symbols at work.
It must be struck down!
2/7. This law has demonstrated that as of right now, minorities in this country effectively don’t have rights. They only have permissions. Our government can take away our rights without any justification.
3/7. Bill 21 has devolved Quebec’s religious minorities into second-class citizens.
Let's call @PierrePoilievre's statement what it is: an attempt to misrepresent what actually happened. The truth about Islamophobia matters - after the London terror attack, after the Quebec City Mosque attack, after the IMO attack. Let's clarify the record.
We remind @PierrePoilievre how the Federal Court of Appeal ruled against his former boss: "the change in policy applicable to women who wear the niqab, that requires them to unveil to take the oath of citizenship, was unlawful."
Harper knew his proposal amounted to a "niqab ban." He got taken to court by a niqab-wearing woman named Zunera Ishaq. She took on your boss (a non-citizen against a government) against all odds, and we stood with her, and she won.
