The @IMFNews issued $650 billion worth of #SDRs in 2021 but 🌍 received 5% while high-income countries received at least 2/3 of the total SDRs.
So what more can be done create an equitable distribution system?
2/
Countries have acknowledged this inequality.
So, some high-income countries like 🇨🇳 have committed to reallocating their #SDRs to #Africa. But this is just one option, our team gave other reallocation options during yesterday's presentation!
3/
1️⃣ Reallocation through the @AfDB_Group Instruments such as the Africa Growing Together Fund where the @AfDB_Group would leverage the #SDRs 3-4 times!
4/
2️⃣ Reallocation through the @IMFNews Instruments such as the Poverty Reduction & Growth Trust - which has been seen as the easier reallocation route.
5/
3️⃣ Reallocation through the @WorldBank for example through the International Bank for Reconstruction & Development (IBRD) & International Development Association (IDA).
These are prescribed #SDR holders but no channelling has been done so far through the @WorldBank!
6/
These are a few of the options our team presented.
Want to know all of them and their implications?
📣NEW📣 Our monthly #INFOGRAPHIC is here, with all you need to know about how #African countries are responding to #COVID19.
Our headline?
While deliveries are still far too low, #China has surpassed #COVAX as #Africa's top vaccine source. How and why? Read on 🧵👇🏾!
1/
2/ The first fact to be aware of is that #Africa accounts for under 3% of global cases, under 4% of global deaths, and under 2% of global vaccines administered.
3/ African governments and the @_AfricanUnion have so far ordered doses to cover 50% of the population. But only 1.9% of the population could be covered right now. It's a huge discrepancy, because deliveries are too slow.
Did you know that #Africa's 55 countries account for just 1.5% of #COVID19 vaccines administered globally? Why? Incompetent governments? Vaccine hesitancy? Poor vaccine efficacy? Our new monthly #infographic report uses the data to explain... A 🧵1/ developmentreimagined.com/2021/05/14/why…
To date, less than 3% of the world's #COVID19 cases have been recorded in #Africa, despite having only administered 1.5% of the world's vaccines, and 2% of the world's #COVID19 tests... 2/
However, #Africa is not a country. It's possible to split African countries into 6 categories - depending on total cases they have recorded. Of the 55 African countries, 6 varied countries are currently seeing new daily records of #COVID19 deaths... 3/
THREAD: #China’s new white paper on international development cooperation was released 1 week ago. We’ve been analyzing it in depth so you don’t have to. Here are the headlines. 1/
First, volumes. How much? On average, approx. $6.95bn a year over 2013-2018. That’s a considerable 70% increase from the $4.1bn per year from 2010-2012, in China's last such white paper (2014). 2/
The major increase is in traditional "aid". Grants have more than doubled from $1.48bn to $3.3bn, while loans have risen by 46% from $2.3bn per year to $3.35bn per year. The hit has been to interest free loans which have fallen to just 29 million per year. 3/
#itsourbirthday! Just three years ago, Development Reimagined was formally "born" in China. We are so proud of where we have come, and SO excited about the road ahead... a #thread 1/
