The fossil fuel industry wants to roll back NY's methane accounting standard, the more accurate 20 Yr. GWP. Why? To cover up the damage they cause & slow down climate action. Here’s what you need to know. A thread. #energytwitter@howarth_cornellbit.ly/3TXwuLY
Methane is a potent GHG but dissipates faster than CO2. Instead of using an outdated 100 year global warming potential metric, NY law, the CLCPA, uses the 20 year GWP to capture the climate damage caused by methane. bit.ly/3TXwuLY
The difference in using the 20 year GWP versus the 100 year GWP are profound. NY’s Climate Plan calculates that the state’s net total emissions were 338.5 MMT CO2e in 2019 per the 20 year GWP. Compare that to 165.5 MMT CO2e net emissions in 2019 using the 100 yr GWP.
Relaxing NY’s GHG accounting will slow climate action, underestimate damage from the fossil fuel sector, and keep polluting infrastructure in place longer, hurting frontline communities.
The 100 year GWP vastly underestimates methane’s contribution to global warming. It also undercounts the GHG contributions from fossil gas. Undercounting methane makes fossil gas appear less dangerous than it really is when compared to cleaner sources.
The 100 GWP obscures the true cost and ultimate ineffectiveness of so-called false solutions. Per the NY climate plan at 351, the 20 GWP means so-called “renewable natural gas” will not be justified at scale from an economic or GHG reduction standpoint. Bit.ly/3ly0k7w
Cancelling 20 GWP will slow down implementation of the CLCPA. Per the NY Climate Plan at 352, the 20 year GWP has caused the state to speed up the clean energy transition in the gas sector. Bit.ly/3ly0k7w
NY has already adopted 20 GWP - cancelling it will require the state’s entire GHG inventory and climate plan to be re-evaluated - it will literally turn back the clock on climate action in the state.
The 20 GWP is the LAW of the NY for good reason- it accurately accounts for the damage methane, and the fossil fuel industry, is doing to the state, people and planet.
100 GWP originated out of the Kyoto Protocol in the early 1990s; By 2008, it was becoming clear that methane is more important to warming than had once been thought, and people began to question the wisdom of GWP100. @howarth_cornell explains: bit.ly/3txwuly

Thank you @AOC I would not be silenced by @RepClayHiggins so let's talk about #petrochemicals in #Louisiana that are disproportionately killing Black people, shattering climate efforts and suffocating the world in plastic and other toxics. A thread.
#Petrochemicals, which are the toxic oil and gas products used to make plastics and pesticides, are #bigoil's big bet - set to be the main consumer of crude oil by 2050 they will shatter climate efforts like the #ParisAgreement: reuters.com/business/envir…
