How to Research Western "Soft Power" Media Influence

A 🪡

1/22
Western governments, corporations, and NGOs devote a lot of resources to "research," "experts," and narrative control.

Of course, other governments do it too, but at this point others are pretty clearly labeled, and those governments being bad is drilled into our minds.

2/22
In some instances, someone may seem like a "#glowie" [fed] but it is impossible to prove.

However, ours is not a subtle age, and the Western soft power machine considers themselves the "good guys," so they commonly don't even obscure their activities; they boast of them

3/22
Instead of seeming paranoid, you can prove who is funding some of the worst hacks in traditional and social media. It often only takes a few clicks.

So many people presenting themselves as neutral and benevolent are actually funded by Western corporations and governments

4/22
I will demonstrate this through some of the best examples I've came along researching for my own work.

Note: I will be using screencaps instead of tweets, both so I don't get blocked, ruining the thread, and so I don't get accused of promoting harassment.

5/22
Sometimes it is easy. See a tweet, go to bio, and right there is @VOANews. Of course, foreign equivalents are labeled which is a dispute about VoA etc now. If you hadn't heard of it, type it into google, the sidebar tells you right away

6/22 ImageImageImage
More commonly, people work for places with multiple sources of funding. @AtlanticCouncil is notorious enough on its own, but that doesn't make it any less valuable to know who funds it.

Note she _lists_ her job as "Disinfo/Influence Operations" at @DFRLab

7/22 ImageImageImage
If you suspect perhaps this @DFRLab has a different purpose than just honesty, after searching for that name, go to the @AtlanticCouncil main website and go to the "Donate" page and see a "Donor Honor Roll" showing the gamut of Anglo-American power:

8/22 ImageImageImage
Just on that first page we see huge donations from the #US and #UK governments, a billionaire, major US corporations in finance, communications, and commerce, and prominent Western #NGO's. All the power centers repped. But there's so much more!

atlanticcouncil.org/in-depth-resea…

9/22
You should assume the smallest donors are mostly just tools or buying access.

Still, as they say "it's a big club and you ain't in it." Funny the entire Western ruling cabal supports the @AtlanticCouncil.

Take special note of "Americans for a Free #Syria..."

10/22 ImageImageImage
Some make it easy, like #Transparency, where there is a funding link at the bottom of the page, which proceeds to tell you that they receive funding from every major Western-aligned government and #GeorgeSoro's #OpenSocietiesFoundations

transparency.org/en/the-organis…

11/22
They include this gem about having a policy against accepting money which impacts their behavior. Of course, if you're sort of person that would believe that about million $ donations to an organization that ranks governments, this is all of no benefit to you

12/22 Image
This is the most useful with orgs you've never heard of though. @OCMediaorg is hilarious in its shamelessness, and does not hide it, getting 75% of its budget from people it says they get accused of working for:

13/22 ImageImageImageImage
@OCMediaorg is the jewel of this thread, getting 40% of funding from @NEDemocracy and another 25% from @georgesoros' @OpenSociety while complaining about being accused of that exact thing.

#NED, of course, is "The second #CIA."

countercurrents.org/2022/05/the-na…

14/22
This absolutely cursed take on #Syria required me to search this awful woman for more than what was in her attached bio, and wouldn't you know it, she's funded heavily by the #Dutch government and Western conflict zone groups:

15/22 ImageImageImageImage
Sometimes the hacks in the media also work at for-profit competitors of the people they are criticizing, and it is treated as somehow making them more credible.

For example, I skewered this @ForeignPolicy for my article about the #Sahel

foreignpolicy.com/2023/01/25/rus…

16/22
The author, a Colin Clarke, spends the whole article criticizing #WagnerPMC, yet he is associated with the #SoufanGroup, itself a #PMC that has operated in theaters where the US has failed in all the ways he says #Wagner will. He's just upset they are not getting a client.

17/22 ImageImage
As I said at the beginning, we live in a very unsubtle age. By simple willingness to use a search engine, you can rapidly see into the cabal trying to control the world and your brain. This is key for understanding the economic interests that shape global events.

18/22
Of course, it doesn't mean everything such people say is wrong. A huge part of effective propaganda is facts being mostly true, especially when they are used to promote garbage arguments, which of course always promote Western military and economic power.

19/22
Still, once again, "It's a big club and you ain't in it."

Organizations like the @AtlanticCouncil want you to freak out about the existence of things like @PressTV, when the entire "mainstream" is completely controlled by Western governments and financial interests.

20/22
You could trust the "experts" but I hope that this will encourage you to "do your own research" on who pays such people. Because they aren't even hiding it: they're proud to work for the US State Department and Goldman Sachs.

Explaining the @RepMattGaetz Interrogation on US-Trained African Coup Leaders

A thread 🪡

1/24
@RepMattGaetz recently had an excellent performance in Congress, where he interviewed the head of US Africa Command, General Langley, about the string of coups led by US-trained military leaders:

2/24
@RepMattGaetz did a very good job, but, I don't know if he understands the larger international relations story here, or if he considers it inconvenient to his narrative, which is the noble goal of getting US troops out of Africa:

Reflections on the 20th Anniversary of the Invasion of Iraq, a 🪡:

1/22
March, 20th marks the 20th Anniversary of "Shock and Awe", the brutal US invasion of Iraq whereby the US government sought to...wait, what was the original purpose? I guess remove weapons of mass destruction.

2/22
Somehow, despite that no one properly claimed this, through implication, 70% of adults came to believe that Saddam was linked to Al Qaeda and 9/11. This despite the fact that Saddam was a secular socialist who brutally stamped down on radical Islam.

I think about this @mtaibbi quote about investigative reporters all the time:

"Real reporting work is mostly a drag, mostly time-consuming, and very often a high-effort, low-reward activity. If you’re doing it right,

1/4
being a nuisance via repeated requests to use a quote or put a name to one, or sitting up at night and hyperventilating about article factoids your sleeping mind has woken you up to have panic attacks about.

There’s a ton of grunt work involved,

2/4
which is why the best exemplars in a profession that attracts many different psychological types — egomaniacs, addicts, rootless wanderers, charmers, social climbers, etc. — are workers. Jeff Gerth is a worker.

I don't know of a single person who goes around Twitter giving unsolicited marriage advice who is actually marriage.

I'll give you some real advice, as someone who has been married to @LaissezLexi 10 years in September:

Marry someone you love and work for it.
I could have rambled about anything ,and I fucking love my wife I Can talk about that all day. But the truth is, marriage isn't easy, if you're not working at it you aren't doing it right, though the good times are so good.
But damn, I don't miss the bad times in our marriage
but honestly, the way Alexis and I were in love 10 years ago when we got married was kind of bullshit, insofar as we we're older people who have actually gone through and tested everything. You never will be unless you marry.

This is a huge leap, but does anyone out there have the name of a company that manufactures the BiModal Voter Accreditation System #BVAS that #INEC uses for #IReV in #Nigeria elections? All I've found is "tech startups" helped modernize

#NigeriaDecides2023 #INECElectionResult
for those extremely confused, Nigeria used a new vote reporting system and had bad reporting delays. Not the main point of my piece but weird I can't find a manufacturer for the biometric system, governments rarely make such things in house. It should be a contractor.
for the record, I have no reason to think anything nefarious went on, it's just strange I can't find the name of the contractor, and will otherwise be publishing that I couldn't discover who made them [its only a minor component of my story]

When were the last good times in America? ; Or, What have we done to the youth?

🧵🪡

1/18
I found out today that a prominent American social media commentator who is, um... immoderately... pro-Russian, is only 21. I had thought he was late 20s.

My instinct was to give him some leeway for the certainty and extremism of youth yet to give way to wisdom of age.

2/18
However, I got to thinking what a person who was born in 2001 has actually been through, and it is dismal to imagine.

I am 35 and was in 8th grade for 9/11, so there was a clear demarcation for a sort of good times ending, but childhood is also a sort of ignorant bliss.
