Tantra is system; to learn the system you must first understand it. People curious about tantra think that if a white or saffron-robe wearing, old guy gives them a mantra then after some practice they’ll also start performing magic.

The western system educated souls think that by chanting a mantra or doing this kriya or that mudra with closed eyes, they’ll one fine day open their eyes and witness their enlightened selves. I encounter both kind of seekers every day.

This is because it is what they have learned from internet or through literature and videos of the new age conmen running various commercial establishments or foundations in the name of spirituality. Everybody wants a quick solution.

We live in a society which has become very consumer centric. Here everything is for sale. From enlightenment to God, you name it, they have it in their warehouse for a price.

And these conmen / babas have huge followings, going into millions because they know the pulse of the market. Everyone is in hurry. These conmen perfectly know that their customers have 9 to 5 jobs to do and they have a family as well.

They know that this generation have all worldly desires & live in a society where all are in a rat race to prove their worth. Thus they have derived various kriyas/ mudras etc that they sell to them as a sure shot recipe for enlightenment.

You don't have time, no problem, you can't control your basic desires, no problem, are jealous of others, no problem, simply devote 15 minutes of yours doing this acrobat or that with a trendy Sanskrit name and soon you’ll be enlightened.

But this 2-min Maggie type secret spiritual recipe comes with a price tag, if you can't spend, there is a problem. After all you are on a spiritual shopping spree & without a heavy wallet you are not allowed to enter their shopping mall.

I don’t think that only these Gurus/Sadguru ABC/Babas /Sri Sri XYZConmen are responsible for such societal degradation. Their so called followers are equally to blame. They think they can buy enlightenment/ awakening/God for a pittance.

They try to befool the system & eventually the system fools them. After spending 2–3 yrs doing some meditation/kriya, when they achieve nothing they start imagining that something is happening that they can't understand or begin looking for options.

They are taught since birth that you are born to make money by parents, relatives, society. They are told that the only parameter of success is money and if you have it enough you can buy anything including the God. That is the problem..

Now on learning tantra; pls understand tantra is path of ultimate truth. We as a society are brought up in a world of lies; it is so strong that our definition of truth is also based upon lies. The path of truth is not for weak hearted.

It tests you at every step. There is an elimination process at every stage & only rarest of rare reach at higher levels. Let me give you a brief sequence of events of what actually happens at early stages of learning tantra/spirituality.

The Start

After initiation the moment you’ll start your spiritual journey, entire world including your own mind will stand up against you. Everyone, be it your parents, your spouse, your siblings will oppose this resolve of yours.

They begin giving gyaan that this path is wrong as it doesn't fit into their belief system. Your mind will try to derail you by giving contradictory ideas about your spiritual practice & everyone else will appear knowledgeable.

Most people end their spiritual journey at this point. Their fears take over, self-confidence & faith in the Guru is tested. But this is path of total surrender & if you aren't confident about the choices you have made, you can never do so & are not eligible.

The Fear

If you are confident enough then by the grace of your Guru, you stop caring about what the others are saying or what your mind is continuously telling you and you move to the next level.

Now you stop worrying about beings of your material world & start your sadhna with confidence. Now beings of other worlds come into picture, will try to scare you. They can't harm you because of your Guru’s grace but they’ll test your faith.

When I started my sadhnas, I used to stay alone in a three bedroom flat at Ashok Vihar, New Delhi. I used to do sadhna in the last bedroom of mine. The main door was always locked from inside and the door of the bedroom also.

After 2–3 minutes into my sadhna, these ethereal beings used to bang on the door of my bedroom hysterically. They used to scream and cry in horrifying voices. The utensils in my kitchen used to fall for no reason creating big noises.

I felt these beings on my body throughout my sadhna but I never got scared. I never ran away. My belief in my Guru & Almighty gave me the confidence. Most of the people get scared on the first day itself and leave their sadhna midway.

It doesn't harm them but they can't go any further. Remember, it’s the path of the bravest of the braves. Without being brave enough or having utmost trust in yourself, your Guru and the Almighty, you simply can’t proceed further.

The Greed

Your ascent to this level implies that you are confident & brave enough to handle challenging situations. Now is the third test, greed. You may tell yourself & others that you are not greedy but that doesn't matter to cosmic world.

The cosmos will test you. Suddenly a lot of money will fstart coming, soon you’ll be filthy rich. All beautiful people around will start falling for you in hordes for no reason. In other words entire surrounding will be at your feet.

And this is the real test. Almost 90% of the remaining lot succumb to their greed at this stage. It is in human nature to seek pleasure and this pleasure is enough to break the resolve of even the brave ones.

If you fall for your worldly greed and desires, your game is over here. You can keep the money you’ve got and other fancy stuff as your reward for reaching to this level but there’ll be no further spiritual progress.

The Killing

Now the cosmos will welcome you to another world. You are not scared of other beings now, neither the greed can get hold of you. Now, it’s time for you to get scared of your own self.

Fear exists in everyone on this earth, only a few people get past of it in real sense. Now fear doesn't necessarily mean the fear of ghosts. The fear of losing whatever you call your own is the real fear.

We fear death the most because we consider this body ours and we identify ourselves with this body only. The fear of losing your job, your wealth, your house, your reputation, your spouse, your kids etc. all exist because ‘you’ exist.

See the word ‘ your’ repeatedly when you relate yourself with this or that. The fear exists in you because of ‘You’, your ego. And till the time this ‘you’ exists in you, you can never become fearless.

At this juncture your Guru will ‘kill you’ , He’ll kill that ‘you’ inside you, He’ll kill ‘your ego’. All that you call ‘yours’ will go away from you. Be it your family, your wealth, your house, your prestige, your pride, everything…

You’ll scream loud at every stroke of your Guru but nothing will be able to save you from that. Cosmos itself will become hell bent on destroying you. It’ll come to the point that you’ll ask for death but even that won't be granted.

This is the most difficult test among all. Almost everyone , well almost… run away at this stage. The ones who endure all this keeping their faith intact in their Guru and the Almighty, they only survive it.

This process makes you fearless. When you have nothing to call ‘your own’ then you don’t fear losing anything. And only the one who is fearless can get to know the Ultimate reality.
