- Monitoring muscle metabolic activity via blood lactate is a useful tool for understanding the physiological response to a given exercise intensity.
- The study tested the hypotheses that:
* A tight relationship exists between delayed skeletal muscle oxygen saturation rate and blood lactate across increasing exercise intensity.
* If transitions or breakpoints in lactate and delayed skeletal muscle oxygen saturation rate are detectable, they would occur at similar exercise intensities.
- Ten elite male soccer players completed an incremental running protocol to exhaustion using 3-min work to 30 sec rest intervals.
- Blood lactate concentration and skeletal muscle oxygen saturation rate appeared in a reciprocally mirrored relationship, with each presenting as a function of exercise intensity in curvilinear form.
- Skeletal muscle oxygen saturation rate rate was strongly correlated with blood lactate across a range of exercise intensity.
- Graded intensity exercise elicited two distinct and notable infections in the skeletal muscle oxygen saturation rate during running, which occurred at all four muscle sites of the body examined.
The running speed associated with breakpoint 1 in the skeletal muscle oxygen saturation rate was not diferent across assessed muscles, but occurred before running speed associated with lactate threshold 1.
The running speed associated with breakpoint 2 in the skeletal muscle oxygen saturation rate was not diferent across muscle assessed, nor from the running speed associated with lactate threshold 2.
- Collectively, these data indicate that skeletal muscle oxygen saturation rates correlate with lactate-based exercise thresholds, although the occurrence of skeletal muscle oxygen saturation rate breakpoint 1 and lactate threshold 1 should not be used interchangeably.
