Last week we kicked off the 5th #Baltic Sea Security Conference in #Stockholm, gathering representatives from 15 countries (#Nordics, #Baltics, PL, #UK, Fr, Ge, NL, #US, Ca). Here are my key take aways from the discussions, marked by a sense of urgency and severity.
A thread🧵: Image
✅Russia constitutes a direct and acute military threat in Europe, and especially to those states it perceives to be in its "sphere of interest".1/10
✅The West must be prepared to fight a war with Russia, in order to avoid it. That is not the case today, but it would be the most efficient deterrence. Russia understands the language of strength.2/10
✅#Ukraine must rapidly be given military support to win -not only endure - against Russia. Air power is vital, as well as long range missiles and continued supply of ammunition. 3/10
✅The West must generate strong political leadership, guided by a vision for Europe as whole, free and at peace. 4/10
✅The West must urgently increase procurement and production military equipment, such as ammunition and missiles. Wartime production rate is needed.5/10
✅Mass and scale still matters, alongside innovation and new technologies. Therefore, the West must also address recruitment (considering reintroduction of conscription) as well as how and what we train and exercise.6/10
✅For more than a decade, Russia has conducted hybrid warfare towards the West, and it continues through sabotage on subwater infrastructure, disinformation and propaganda, orchestrated migration, cyberattacks, electronic jamming, etc. The #EU is key to address most of these challenges, as is EU-#NATO cooperation.7/10
✅Northern Europe must have the capacity to be a First Responder. Regional initiatives can pave the way to move fast on a tactical level. 8/10
✅#Germany and #Poland should be more integrated into #Baltic Sea security.9/10
Thanks to the Swedish Armed Forces for co-hosting and @US_EUCOM for a decade-long engagement in the format. 10/10

Erdogan´s move to only ratify #Finland goes against the wish of those 28 allies who have already ratified both Sweden and Finland – together, as it was intended. Turkey creates a wedge in #NATO that mainly serves the interest of Russia. A thread👇

1/5 Russia benefits from a fragmented and unfulfilled security architecture in Europe. Hungary, also with close ties to Russia, will follow suite and only ratify Finland.
2/5 Sweden’s status as an invitee means that defense and political integration into NATO is ongoing. Noteworthy, Turkey is not blocking it. In addition, several allies have already given bilateral security assurances. Hence, in the short term, the decoupling is less worrisome.

Against a backdrop of severe tensions with Russia, last week’s #MSC2022 was full of bold words, but little bold action. The stakes are higher than ever—but the transatlantic community does not seem to be up to the challenge.
Here are my takeaways ⬇️
Teamwork and US leadership was a common thread through #MSC2022
In contrast to previous crises, #sanctions packages were prepared, coordinated, and ready to be executed within hours.
The #US has also been helpful with #energy security following the suspension of Nord Stream 2.
Meanwhile, French Defense Minister @florence_parly sets “modest” expectations for European defense.
@Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz called for a strong European pillar in the Alliance, while #Germany’s unwillingness to step up on defense spending prevailed.

As we wake up to the one of the worst days in Europe's modern history, we have to realize that bold words need to be matched with bold action. My take from #MSC2022
@KKrVA_Sverige @Marshall_Center @ISDP_Sweden @AFF_sweden #föpol #säkpol #utpol @benjaminhaddad
Bolder actions would include sharper sanctions faster; providing arms to Ukraine, and timetables for accession into #EU and #NATO
