To start the day, we're joining: Samantha Mills, Cindy Ho, Sarah Felkar, and Diana Marshall in

F03: Steal this Framework! Approaches to Digital Literacy Instruction at the Public Library
FVRL: how a large regional system with no central location can respond to each community it serves.
Richmond: dedicated space for digital literacy at a central branch; a space that's acknowledges it can be hard to learn something new
VPL: laptops for transporting to different branches for tech classes; tech focuses and programs by different departments as appropriate

West Van lib: digital programming initially in one space but spread out, initially ad-hoc digital literacy programming
FVRL: digital literacy is a frame of mind. STEAM is the digital literacy framework. Science & technology interpreted through engineering & the arts all based in elements of mathematics. : Numbers. We use them every day & so we can incorporate digital literacy every day.
Ex: Painting through drag-and-drop coding. Teaching ukulele and downloading music.

STEAM humanizes hard sciences and provides a way to connect what the patron is seeking to do with digital literacy skills.
They turned the STEAM pyramid into a chart that can help identify strengths/weaknesses in the programs/offerings from the library and also recognize the interests of the community
initiatives like using stellarium and pairing it was loanable telescopes. 🌠
Richmond space: opened spaces up, brighter lighting and walls; machines for coding/3D modelling/animation/digitizing (VHS, for example); structure with glass walls that lets you host large events or allow patrons to work individually; green screen
framework is a Growth Mindset: view challenges as opportunities, learning as a process that includes failure, welcome constructive criticism
assists w/ BC education initiatives locally: instructional classes for teachers on development days, for example design-thinking session; resources & technology loaned to students; student-focused maker fair;
moved tech tools to branch libraries closer to schools for students who couldn't make it to the main digital space; connect cross-generationally with technology.
VPL: adult digital literacy learning.
Reconsidered the adult learners at VPL with a digital perspective:
Who are our digital learns?
What skills should we teach (what do they need now)?
What are best practices for designing learning?
How should we teach?
Created a Digital Literacy Skills Framework with clear, observable learning outcomes.

Next: 6 digital essentials (vpl.ca/program/digita…)
Use a backwards design: identify skill, determine how it can be observable, then create the lesson plans.

New lesson plans.

internal staff training: session about instruction for adults. based on what was learned in these previous steps.
What VPL learned
-prioritize experiential learning & concrete achievements
-consider what requires scaffolding.
-determine what should/shouldn't be a class--other options!
-dedicated staffing
-empower staff to take ownership
-be future friendly! (plan for regular revisions)
West Van: uses streams:
For Adults: Use it, Share it, Create it, Develop it, Imagine it :: Allows for classes and directed learning as well as discovery and exploring something new
For Youth: Develop it, Create it, Imagine it & Drop-In (learn on their own, work with others)
across these digital literacy initiatives : community consultation key to developing a program that fits locally. many of these patrons aren't pursuing digital literacy outside their community so it had to happen through the library.
Lots of changes in scale:: From general technology to more specific learning needs, from computers to 3D printers and more advanced tools. From 2 programs a week to 2 programs a day. From one room or one branch to many.

Victims of our own success!
More to think about while you're engaging in digital literacy: revision, how you can internally collaborate -- make sure those ideas get captured, not lost or forgotten.
Resources from this session: bit.ly/bcladiglit
Teaching in languages other than English: not systemically happening, but slowly developing with existing English content. Staff with language proficiencies and community partners are being tapped to translate materials
