Today, the State Senate passed our Michigan Voting Rights Act to ensure every qualified Michigander has protected access to their ballot — free from discrimination, intimidation, or any undue burden.

@darrincamilleri @stephanielily @SenErikaGeiss @JocelynBenson In the last several years here in Michigan, election deniers have promoted conspiracies, primarily targeting communities of color, and have pushed for policies in the Senate that would restrict voting access.

This is not how Jews view the phrase “from the river to the sea.” This is not how Hamas views the phrase “from the river to the sea.”

Hamas uses it as a rallying cry. And they don’t simply want to displace Jews in Israel. They want Jews dead. Hamas killed 1400 Jews in just a few hours. They are holding 200+ more in unknown conditions. They would kill all 7 million Jews in Israel if they could.

And if you can’t imagine that happening, read a history book.

One biggest election policy failures of the previous MI Legislature was the refusal to more efficiently tabulate the record number of absentee ballots, just as other states do.

My bills finally allow for pre-Election Day tabulation of absentee ballots.

🧵 of how we got here: From @politico after the 2020 election: “Because state law prohibited the processing of absentee votes until 7 a.m. on Election Day, everyone understood the state would face a historic backlog of votes to count once the polls closed at 8 p.m.”

This Senate hearing is 50 yrs in the making, when #LGBTQ Michiganders first sought to include discrimination protections in Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act.

We must finally amend the act. We’re not asking for more than anyone else but we cannot accept less than equal protection. 40 yrs ago, Rep. Jim Dressel’s effort to expand the civil rights act was defeated. He lost his re-election & devoted the rest of his life to #LGBTQ rights until he died in 1992.

This hearing is dedicated to him & countless advocates over many years.

As a gay Michigander & a State Senator, I’ve been heartened by how many people are standing up for our #LGBTQ youth.

The many recent retweets amplify our message: we are fighting for #equality. Now it’s time to elevate that with action.

🧵Here’s how you can help our community: We need to show all Michigan legislators that our #LGBTQ community and allies exist in ALL legislative districts and are demanding action on #equality legislation.

There’s a special election for a vacant Senate seat in west MI in which two GOP Reps are facing off.

One supports LGBTQ protections in our state’s civil rights law. The other, Rep. Mark Huizenga, is now promoting the most anti-LGBTQ rhetoric of the legislative session.

1/6 Image Rep. Mark Huizenga says: “Supporting this legislation is not a vote against discrimination, but a vote for the liberal LGBTQIA+ political agenda”

As the bill sponsor, I’ll share our “agenda.”

(And fact check: Brann is NOT the only Republican co-sponsor in the Legislature)

#Stonewall was 51 years ago today, yet MI's GOP-led legislature can't even #RecognizeMIPride. They refused to bring my resolution recognizing #PrideMonth to a vote — for the 6th year in a row. But that won’t stop us from recognizing #LGBTQ history ourselves. THREAD: ⬇️ 1/ #mileg #Stonewall didn't happen in a vacuum, so let’s back up. During the post-WWII Cold War, anti-communist paranoia was high. The 1950s Red Scare was our govt’s witch-hunt to root out suspected communists...& other "subversives." You can guess where this is going. #RecognizeMIPride 2/

Why today’s #StayHomeStaySafe order from @GovWhitmer is so important, ICYMI from her address earlier:

In just 13 days, we’ve gone from 0 to 1,232 confirmed cases in Michigan of the #coronavirus #COVID19. It has doubled over the weekend. This virus is spreading exponentially. From @GovWhitmer: We have roughly 10 million people in Michigan. There is a model that anticipates that if we stay on our current trajectory, just like Italy, over 70 percent of our people could get infected with #COVID19.

In the no-fault “compromise,” healthcare execs have wins & losses, insurance execs have wins & losses, trial lawyers have wins & losses. And they’ll all be just fine.

But the most vulnerable - the catastrophically injured - ONLY have losses. 1/ Today I voted for those accident victims, and I spoke about that on the Senate floor two weeks ago. 2/
