Maliparbat, a bauxite-rich hill in Koraput, Odisha, is leased to manufacturing giant #HINDALCO & a public hearing today will decide the future of this lease. Of the 44 villages in the area, 41 oppose the mining. In our quest for development, are we sidelining indigenous voices?🧵 Local resistance led to the mines being closed in 2010, but #Hindalco sought to renew the environmental clearance for bauxite mining on Maliparbat. When the local communities protested at public hearings, they were met with harsh treatment from the police.

The #PersonalDataProtection Bill (2019) was re-inspected by a Joint Parliamentary Committee, which tabled its report in Dec '21. Though the JPC recommended changes in their draft Data Protection Bill, those regarding non-consensual data processing are the most concerning🧵 Within the provisions of the draft #DataProtectionBill, your data could be used, without your consent. In fact, the government could continue using personal and non-personal data that they know to be incorrect. How did we get here?

To the delight of many, the #Karnataka govt began offering three eggs/week to students since Dec 1st across seven districts under the mid-day meal scheme.

This decision has drawn stiff opposition from religious groups and seers in the state + "Karnataka is the only South Indian state that has not provided eggs [to all dist kids] as part of mid-day meal in spite of the fact that 94% students in the govt & aided schools belong to communities that eat eggs." +

In November, schools in Karnataka reopened after being closed due to the second wave of COVID-19. The initial shift from offline to online classes was difficult for students, parents, teachers to adjust to. But what about the transition back once again to physical schooling? 🧵 But first, the context: India had the world's second-longest shutdown of physical classes in the world, at 82 weeks. 24 crore children were affected, of which, 1 in 4 students did not have access to digital devices. So, it's no wonder that the shift was difficult to adjust to.
