Er is zo ontzettend veel onderzoek gedaan naar de effecten van #stikstof op de natuur, experimenteel, correlatief, in het veld, in de kas. Als er iets is dat we weten, dan is het dat de diversiteit van planten en het bodemleven vermindert en processen beïnvloedt. (1/x) Als je zoekt op "nitrogen deposition ecosystems" en selecteert voor artikelen sinds 2019, dan vind je honderden studies die voor het overgroter deel vinden dat stikstofdepositie een effect heeft op de natuur. Geweldig dat @Simon_Rozendaal erkent dat stikstofdepositie slecht is voor de natuur, en @NatureTodayNL leest! Maar het punt dat wij onze voedselarme natuur niet hoeven te behouden omdat die elders in overvloed aanwezig is – Engelse moors en Duitse heide – slaat de plank mis.(1/x) Zo goed gaat het namelijk niet met de Engelse moors. De biodiversiteit gaat achteruit en de habitatkwaliteit is slecht, vooral van montane en upland heath. (2/x)

In this study, we show that it's not a good idea to wash roots and immediately collect #root exudates: because of the washing-induced root damage, roots are losing a lot of C and exudate profiles are likely not accurate. (1/6)

sciencedirect.com/science/articl… Letting the roots recover for a few days before collecting exudates gets rid of this artefact, and allows distinguishing between species and re-application of exudates for mechanistic experiments. (2/6)

When I was still on holiday, my opus magnum on nitrogen retention came out @JEcology: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

We sampled three glacier forelands to assess how ecosystem N retention is affected by succession, and to determine the plant and microbial controls on N retention. (1/x) As glaciers melt, they expose barren parent material on which succession starts. Because we know exactly when the front of the glacier was where, we know the age of the ecosystems in front of the glacier. This is a great system to test fundamental ecological questions! (2/x)

I walked a total of 15k today in my various Zoom meetings, in-person meetings, and phone calls! Pretty grey and chilly though. I can't recommend this enough. It's so easy: install Zoom on your phone, get a headset that is good for walking, and go! It's a real game-changer for my #mentalhealth and physical health.

Dit advies "Op weg naar een New Deal tussen boer en maatschappij" is vandaag gepubliceerd door @rijks_adviseurs - het is nogal een boekwerk, daarom vat ik de belangrijkste punten even samen👇
collegevanrijksadviseurs.nl/actueel/nieuws… Maar allereerst: het is een mooi rapport met een heldere boodschap, gebaseerd op pilots met echte boerenbedrijven. De toon is positief en inclusief - dit rapport gaat hopelijk écht bijdragen aan een duurzamere landbouw die beter is voor bodem en landschap.
