🧵 I've had some heartbreaking conversations about kids being hospitalized w/#Covid_19.

While the #s are small compared to adults -- 173 kids 17 & younger were hospitalized w/COVID in all of Illinois as of Wed. -- it's still frightening for parents & those taking care of them. .@JakeKaneMD took time out of his busy day to tell me what the ICU looks like at @ComerChildrens:

On Wed., 40% of beds were occupied by kids who had #Covid_19. The ICU was filled w/unvaccinated children.

'It’s not sparing anybody,' Kane said.

In #Illinois, it's a secret exactly which nursing homes, where some of the most vulnerable people live, have residents & staff testing positive for #COVID19. @IDPH told me they won't release this info to protect to resident's private health information. @WBEZ @WBEZpolitics .@IDPH cited a regulation about communicable diseases for not releasing the info to @joemahr & others @chicagotribune. Some local health depts & nursing homes are releasing info themselves. It's a patchwork system of transparency in #Illinois, folks. @aarpillinois @mvtopic

⚡️THREAD ⚡️ On Friday, I told the story of a Northwestern Memorial Hospital psychiatrist whose unit did not use protective gear like masks and gowns, known as #PPE. She works in a communal space, where patients can mingle over board games. @WBEZ @WBEZpolitics @NPR Here's how @RonkePedersonMD put it: 'It’s kind of like telling a soldier to go to war and bring back the enemy with them into their community, cause that’s what we’re doing without PPE.' #GetMePPE #GetMePPEChicago @GovPritzker

Could the charity care battle return to Illinois hospitals? @CookCountyBoard commissioners, frustrated by how much free medical care its @CookCtyHealth provides, is targeting rival hospitals to step up >> tinyurl.com/ycalmusx @CarlaKJohnson @AllanBaumgarten @bobjherman Some background >> @CookCtyHealth provides nearly 1/2 of all the free care in #CookCounty, even though there are nearly 70 hospitals here. .@CookCtyHealth is the region’s medical safety net, known for treating everyone whether they can pay or not. But how much free health care can it provide? The estimated tab this year: about half a billion dollars. Here’s why. Read/listen @WBEZ (1/16) >> tinyurl.com/ydfzefjd 2 big reasons: 1) @CookCtyHealth’s share of free care is growing, while other hospitals in #CookCounty provide less 2) #CookCounty health system’s ability to bill & get paid.
