THREAD: A few big name streamers tried to throw doubt on the #ADayOffTwitch movement's impact.

As somebody who works in PR, allow me to breakdown why the past three days have probably caused internal ructions at our favourite streaming platform...
1. A quick coverage pull shows that in the last 30 days, the #ADayOffTwitch movement has garnered just shy of 950 pieces of news coverage globally - granted a lot of these are likely syndications, that's a LOT of noise for what people considered a "pointless movement"
2. Now, if I was working in Twitch's PR department, and I saw that many articles from top tier gaming press (Kotaku, Polygon, PinkNews, etc)...I would be hitting the panic button. Not just because of the volume, but because of what might come next...

#ADayOffTwitch is about Hate Raids. I want you to think about this before you stream. People are allowing exceptions for contract streamers who depend on streaming for income. That's fine.

What I care about with whoever hops on today and crosses the picket line are intentions
#twitchblackout is a protest and boycott about Twitch's incompetence and negligence to marginalized creators who wish to escape from the world just like everyone else. However, as we know by now, we don't get that kind of luxury. Fandom and hobbies are a battleground
Battleground?

Yes, a battleground.

The war? None other than the notorious "Culture War". Hate Raids are a continuation and an attempt to reignite this bullshit yet again.

No stream today in solidarity with those experiencing hate raids and demanding action.

To those sneering that it won’t make any difference - it’s already trending in the UK and has been written about in many international media outlets.

#ADayOffTwitch
Obviously there will be some who are contractually obliged to stream today and others who don’t want to be silenced, which I totally understand.

But those who claim that it won’t make any difference because it doesn’t hurt Twitch’s revenue directly are being wilfully ignorant.
Awareness and will do a lot more than a small financial hit and the campaign has been very successful in achieving that.

Twitch is listening so make your voices heard!

it comes as no surprise to ANY of us that most of the top streamers on Twitch are uninformed about hate raids, don't notice them in their own channels & aren't using their platforms to speak up about the harassment and abuse marginalized creators deal with on a daily basis. 🧵
Of the Top 50 streamers on Twitch by average viewership, ONE of them is a woman. Fifty-nine of them are men. Y'all make BANK off of Twitch and most don't look out for anyone on the platform but themselves. that's their choice, sure - but it's a shitty, selfish and gross choice.
before anyone @'s me about highlighting the gender disparity here: sincerely from the bottom of my heart have a very shut the fuck up & educate yourself on privilege.

Our expectations were low but holy s**t. You just said the quiet part out loud, @/Asmongold

I know there are a ton of comments replying to this calling me a hypocrite because I asked people not to harass those who don't participate.

If you think my tweet was criticising him for not participating, you ought to read it again & again until you understand it.
I criticised his belittling of smaller content creators for starting a movement that he believed wouldn't cause any change.

Yet here we are, two days later and the organiser of this protest has a meeting with Twitch staff.
