Detailed study in Nature last month of how Mayapan—the biggest Maya city in Yucatán in ~AD1100-1450—responded to a century of drought may provide insight into our own drought-plagued future. nature.com/articles/s4146… 1/18
Mayapan was the capital of a confederacy of smaller states, the most powerful Maya political entity at the time. It rose after the decline in ~900AD of the famous city-states in the southern Yucatán (e.g., Tikal). (map: Masson and Peraza Lope 2014) 2/18 Image
The confederacy was ruled by a council of noble houses in fractious coalitions. Details are sketchy cuz every time a new coalition arose it rewrote the city’s history and put itself at the center. (Image of Mayapan stela by Linda Schele—the text was deliberately obliterated) 3/18 Image

Below is a long-ish thread🧵for some context to this amazing meme from @DrArialShogren and @thats_me_del_p.

TL;DR -- Our words matter. They shape and bias our understanding of the systems we study.

[1/n]
First -- I'm blessed to have great colleagues @UaDeptBSC who put up with my shenanigans.

This conversation started with me giving @thats_me_del_p a hard time about a small grant proposal. The title mentioned "drivers of intermittence."

[2/n] Image
I'm not a big fan of umbrella terms like #sustainability, #connectivity, and now #intermittence.

In #interdisciplinary teams, negotiating a common language is difficult. I actually think its often MORE difficult when we share common terms with slightly diverging definitions

Me, checking my mentions, and realising the Guardian have published another Johnan Harri article
NB: I tend to deliberately misspell his name on here, because I hear he's a notorious self-searcher. And I still occasionally get his acolytes sending me threats/wildly untrue accusations. Pretty tragic really, but who has the time to deal with that guff
And if anyone's wondering how/why Harri is still readily published by the Guardian despite, you know, everything he's guilty of, then this old thread of mine may shine some light on that

Today the vet told me that since Covid, they’ve had to treat a number of cats with depression caused by irritation that their people are at home all day. Obviously it’s not really funny but… that’s the most Cat thing I’ve ever heard. Apparently dogs do not have the same problem.
Turned 🔔s off this morning and now look 😲

Since you’re here, please help #operationark by letting @BWallaceMP @BorisJohnson @TomTugendhat know that you support getting @Nowzad’s 70 staff + 100 animals out of Kabul, on a plane that has been paid for (by donations). Thanks!
And for those asking… they can and do treat animals with anti-depressants. I’ve asked before and expected to be laughed at - but it’s a Thing. And the link to lockdown is made by seeing the onset of symptoms since last March 👩‍⚕️

1. CLARIFY

Many people jump straight into solving the problem. Take time to ask clarifying questions — some people intentionally underspecify as a way to catch you out.

The BIG reason you want to clarify: demonstrating clear communication skills. Every employer wants this 💁‍♂️
2. EXAMPLES

To confirm understanding, come up with examples. Write some sample inputs, and then the expected outputs.

This doubles as TDD — as you write your solution, you should constantly rerun it against what you've agreed upon.

To look for edge cases, think like a QA 💁‍♂️ A QA tester walks into a bar joke

Since he's trending tonight (and since a new @MULawPoll comes out tomorrow), here's one of my favorite strange poll results, on Wisconsin's senior Senator, Ron Johnson.

Despite (gestures wildly at everything he's done), he's relatively unknown in his home state. Image
I wrote about this in a column last year, and said Democrats should really start focusing on letting the world know about our terrible Senator. Maybe they're listening! recombobulationarea.substack.com/p/disappearing… Image
Anyway, I'll be writing about the @MULawPoll results tomorrow. Subscribe so you won't miss it #shamelessplug: recombobulationarea.substack.com/subscribe

A thread on how your votes translate into seats for political parties a #SriLankaElections2020 This is straight out of the Constitution [Article 99(5) - (9) & 99A]
EVERY VOTE COUNTS, even if you can't help a party win in your district, it still counts for the national list [1/10]
Each voter can cast ONE vote for a political party & up to three preferences for candidates nominated by that political party. So REMEMBER your vote counts, so go vote tomorrow bright and early #LKAElections2020 [2/10]

Just thought I'd share the few simple rules I try to adhere to as much as possible these days. My main goal is to gather more $BTC, because I believe that that will be around for a while to come and will increase in value again, so, let's get to it then.
1. Half of my PF is always in $BTC, locked away on a Ledger somewhere I don't have easy enough access to. This is to protect me from going ham on alts or microcaps and always have a fair share in $BTC.
2. I never trade more than 1% risk based on the other half of my stack. Made a handy little calculator app for that based on stop and entry price but Excel will do just fine. The formula is fairly simple: ((RiskPercentage / 100) x CapitalSize) / (EntryPrice - StopPrice).

A few words on ‘Tommy Robinson’, @BBCNewsnight and freedom of speech. Firstly, to be clear, it’s well within Newsnight’s freedom of speech to do a piece on Stephen Yaxley-Lennon. This is *not* about ‘gagging’ him at all. 1/n
Secondly, it’s *also* part of *our* freedom of speech that we can criticise their decisions (a) to do the piece about Yaxley-Lennon and (b) how they do that piece. That’s our right, and our freedom. 2/n
Thirdly, that (as many have noted) freedom of speech does not mean the right to a platform for everyone. Yaxley-Lennon has no more right to demand a feature on his views and role than I do. 4/n

Gotta love Strava heatmaps. Here's a heatmap of people running in Niamey, Niger. About 160km south of where a US solider was killed in Tongo Tongo last year 1/
Here's 3x Predator drones at the same location. One is taxiing for takeoff. 2/
Here's 3 more military planes at the same location. One looks like a JSTARS.
