A few reflections on and highlights from Preventable by @devisridhar #Covid19 #pandemics #globalhealth
Gone into print in August 2021, the book is a reminder of harrowing images (and for many very real personal experiences and losses). I sadly think many of these have already been forgotten, just a few months later.
Also a reminder in these times that we continue to forget and neglect the importance of #healthsystems #publichealth and #healthworkers, as we buy into the newest „shine“ of the moment.
For me, one of the most important lessons of the #pandemic globally, highlighted in this text. A rise in #nationalism and breakdown of international collaboration and solidarity has resulted in prolonging this pandemic, and there‘s still no end in sight.
What I value most about this book (& Devi‘s work) is that there are no simple silver bullets. Not „the one scientific expert“, not „the one model“, not „the one simple solution that solves everything, for everyone“. Diversity is key to capturing this complexity.
Will the world face another outbreak? Absolutely. Devi asks not only whether we can prevent it - but often neglected - „how much suffering can we prevent the next time around?“
Why is this all important? For me the key sentences.
As with Devi‘s tweets, I love that she‘s not afraid to #speakout (some lovely quotes about political leaders), is immensely clear, has humor, and as I learned, also has a 🐢 (agree, perfect pet for #workaholics).
