It seems a lot of the ethics issues we're facing in the world of 2018 originate from a general unwillingness to have clear values and to stand by them. Know what you value, stay true to it.
The first step is to think about values. Too many people are going out of their way to avoid having to ask these questions, or to avoid openly endorsing any principle that might be controversial (including fundamental humanistic values that until recently were widely accepted).
A little bit of controversy is acceptable. It is often through debate and controversy that we end up defining more clearly where we stand and what we believe in. Controversy also forces us to periodically reconsider our values -- and that's good; values are not dogma.
