A friend highly recommended this book when we met in Dec-17. Finally got around to reading it. Gem of a book and given that it was written in 1983, it's safe to say that this is a classic, which has survived the test of time!

So after a hellish couple days, I finally got around to reading @DouthatNYT's WASP article. I actually like its central point—that today's elites could learn some things from yesterday's. But two things:
1) His obsession with America's "meritocrats"—which he shares with writers like McArdle and Richard Reeves—as a new ruling class probably isn't going to hold up to well, given that America is about to see a cascade of inherited wealth passed on to the next generation.
1.5) Relatedly, if you spend enough time with income and political donor data, you quickly realize that America is run as much by successful car dealers as it is by people who went to college in Boston.

So, I finally got around to reading that Yale law study of Amazon and anti-trust. Some parts of it are a bit counterfactual. (yalelawjournal.org/article/amazon… - Cc @linamkhan)
The abstract states a core premise: Amazon is selling below cost. This is a problem. Like any retailer Amazon sells some things below cost as loss-leaders, but it’s mathematically impossible for it to be running the whole business below cost - it would run out of cash
The piece doesn’t try to work out where the money might come from to sell at a loss. The closest is the assertion that investors ‘have poured money in’ (is that referring to funding? Or just the share price?). If so, Amazon has not raised new equity since the IPO in 1997.

Finally getting around to reading this excellent paper from @a_a_jackson @ODIdev. Big takeaway: insurgent governance doesn't stem from the capture of territory. It precedes it. odi.org/sites/odi.org.…
This has implications for how we understand the ways in which groups gain control of institutions and populations not only in Afghanistan, but also in Iraq, Syria, Libya, etc.
We know that groups co-opt pre-existing governance structures rather than razing them. This work suggests we should further re-conceptualize what control looks like in civil war. Just b/c formal gov't structures are still present in an area doesn't mean the gov't's in control.

Finally got around to reading two interesting pieces on symmetries & asymmetries in motivated cognition as a function of political preferences. (1/x)
First is this piece by Ditto (@BizarroPolitix) et al, which finds (via meta-analysis) that motivated reasoning is largely symmetric across the left/right dimension (and/or other political-preference dimensions (2/x): researchgate.net/publication/31…

Starting a thread of books I finished reading in 2018. There’s gonna be a lot of terse ‘reviews’ as I only stated this thread after I was 14 books deep but here we go...
1. Winter, by Karl Ove Knausgaard. Short essays about all manner of things. Pretty great but mostly just excited for the final installment of My Struggle, finally out in English later this year.
2. Less: A Novel. Andrew Sean Greer. Really fun, just won the Pulitzer
