Amelia Earhart was declared dead #OnThisDay in 1939.

She was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

Earhart was the daughter of Samuel "Edwin" Stanton Earhart and Amelia "Amy". She was born in Atchison, Kansas, in the home of her maternal grandfather, Alfred Gideon Otis, who was a former federal judge, the president of the Atchison Savings Bank.
According to family custom, Earhart was named after her two grandmothers, Amelia Josephine Harres and Mary Wells Patton. From an early age, Amelia was the ringleader while her sister Grace Muriel Earhart (1899–1998), two years her junior, acted as the dutiful follower.

Ashkenazi Jews have no tradition of using surnames. None. For almost all of Ashkenazi history people were known only by a given name and a patronymic. For example, Moishe ben (son of) Abraham.
This is still how we do Hebrew names, and up until the early 19th century that was the *only* way we did names. Jews didn't have family names that passed from generation to generation. So how do we have all these European sounding Jewish last names now?

For almost two millennia, the Rhine was one of Europe’s great trade highways. Why? Despite the inherent dangers of river travel, it was safer than road travel, with bandits, wild animals and other dangers. Heck, you could also carry a lot more on a boat. /2
Of course, when medieval landowners saw boats passing through their territory, human nature meant that they wanted to be paid for the privilege. Tolls on river traffic were established, and more importantly were controlled by the Holy Roman Emperor to ensure fairness & flow. /3

Rudolf, the son of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II, was born in Vienna in 1552. He was a quiet kid, more interested in reading and learning than his peers. A couple of years with his uncle, Philip II of Spain, only made withdraw more into himself and his interests. /2
As a young man he received a series of titles, before being crowned Holy Roman Emperor on the death of his father in 1576. While many might launch themselves into the role, Rudolf struggled - he suffered from the frequent black depressions that were common among the Habsburgs. /3
