I'm not a designer. I can't even draw a straight line to save my own life, but @figmadesign changed the game and lower the barrier to entry for product designer.
@figmadesign My younger brother, with no prior design experience, after 4 months of sitting under the tutelage of @namnsoukpanah is now churning out some really cool stuff. 4 months ago he was blank, today he is talking design systems and all.
He has done nothing more than eat, sleep, read and practise. All of this was possible because, on like other tools that requires you to need a special kind of machine, Figma's only requirement is a web browser with a decent Internet connection.
He is by no means a pro, but he is well on his way to becoming an amazing product designer. I can only imagine what he will look like 18 months from now. He goes for service in Nov.
The beautiful thing is that by the time he's done with NYSC, he will be armed with a very vital industry skill. One that will not go out of fashion anytime soon. It got me thinking, how can this effort be deployed at scale?
What would happen if 100 young persons(pre-NYSC) with access to good Internet, a laptop and a flair for art will just invest 6 - 9-months learning how to design with Figma. What will that look like? Will we plug the much needed design talent?
