1/ I actually took German 101 and Advanced simultaneously; so I can speak it a bit but have a hard time understanding sometimes because there are just too many words I don't know. But: funny story. I was in Berlin doing some work on a pre-Sense8 project and was in a meeting...
2/ ...with several Germans showing options on a particular aspect, and assuming -- not incorrectly -- that most Americans never bothered to learn another language, kept making little asides to each other about the "stupid Americans." So at one point, after showing me a video...
3/ ..they'd made showcasing their work, I said "Noch einmal, bitte," meaning one more time, please. They reached for the video controls then froze, realizing I had understood most of what they'd said. Never saw two people looking more horrified than that day.

1/ Quick reminder: There are always lots of interested and interesting folks here who have questions, far more than I can ever get around to answering. Since I can only give so much to Twitter - every 10 minutes here is 10 minutes I'm not writing -- it would help me a lot...
2/ ...if the questioner could do a quick google search prior to posting when an inquiry arises in case the information is easily available, which is common. This would help me make the best use of my time answering questions where the answers are not already out there...
3/ ...this lets me concentrate on interesting new questions not repetitions of prior posts. This account should be viewed as kind of the court of last resort for information, not the first, allowing me to be of the most service to folks who visit here.

1/ As the guy who co-created the character of She-Ra and her universe alongside Larry DiTillio (though Mattel named her), a few thoughts. (Note: I am in no way connected with the current show, so I'm speaking both as an outsider to what is and an insider to what was intended).
2/ We never considered or wrote for She-Ra as "the ideal woman." I don't think that phrase appeared anywhere in the bible we wrote, and certainly never in our discussions. We spoke, and wrote of, and considered her a warrior, first and foremost.
3/ So I think anyone who is looking back at She-Ra (or Adora) as the "ideal woman" is doing so through the lens of prepubescent (since it was aimed at kids) interest and kind of, understandably, imprinted on her like baby ducks. I get it. But that wasn't the creative *intent*.

One of the biggest issues in late 19th century labor is something that we have a hard time understanding today--control over the minute by minute aspects of work. Most workers controlled much of their daily work lives. They weren't breathing machines. They were skilled.
This didn't really fit well into the Industrial Revolution and especially after the Civil War, control over the shopfloor and work process was a major issue of contention between labor and management. We have so lost this battle that we can't really comprehend it well today.

@mattfarina @Crell @sdboyer This is an absolutely fair criticism - we have not handled the community process around dependency management well. The core Go team was not involved early or often enough for that process to lead to a smooth landing. As tech lead for Go, that was my fault, and I apologize.
@mattfarina @Crell @sdboyer Ever since I wrote “go get,” we on the core Go team hoped the community would take care of dependency management. Keith Rarick's goven and then godep, and Matt Butcher's glide, and Dave Cheney's gb all seemed like promising steps toward a solution.
@mattfarina @Crell @sdboyer In spring 2015, Jason Buberel spent a while surveying these efforts and trying to understand how to unify them. The evidence he gathered clearly showed that a major impediment for all these tools was the lack of support in the go command for what we now call vendor directories.

I keep thinking back to a discussion a few months on reddit about THE BELGARIAD. Several comments were made about it being cliche and pedestrian, and someone said, “Yeah, it’s a fine story, but it’s never going to be a classic.”
And all I could think to respond was, “It’s over thirty years later and we’re still talking about it. How is that NOT ‘a classic’?
But that got me thinking- I cite THE BELGARIAD (and THE MALLOREON, its sequel series) as one of my influential works. But what is that influence? I know I’ve read the whole series several times. My copies of the books are in terrible shape.

I've probably told this story to some people, but it has come to mind because of Wil Wheaton having a hard time grappling with finding out his bff is also a domestic abuser.

So years and years ago when my first husband was alive, he was, among other things, a practitioner of a martial art, and he took students because in this martial art that's one of the things you do when you reach a certain skill level.
He had a lot of students over the years, but by the time we were together he had five or six at any one time. A couple of years after we met, he took a new student, we'll call him Ralph for convenience's sake.
