1/ I actually took German 101 and Advanced simultaneously; so I can speak it a bit but have a hard time understanding sometimes because there are just too many words I don't know. But: funny story. I was in Berlin doing some work on a pre-Sense8 project and was in a meeting...
2/ ...with several Germans showing options on a particular aspect, and assuming -- not incorrectly -- that most Americans never bothered to learn another language, kept making little asides to each other about the "stupid Americans." So at one point, after showing me a video...
3/ ..they'd made showcasing their work, I said "Noch einmal, bitte," meaning one more time, please. They reached for the video controls then froze, realizing I had understood most of what they'd said. Never saw two people looking more horrified than that day.
