Today is my 2nd last day of tweeting for @realscientists....
Work-wise, I am catching up with research tasks, having spent the week meeting teaching deadlines. I'll be giving feedback on an upcoming poster presn & a lit review; catching up on research projects & trip planning...
In-between tasks, I will aim to answer some Qs that were posed to me last night...

A thing I am dealing with now is studying cancer in test tubes and watching my father fight cancer in real life.
I know there are many scientist and doctors who experience this very same thing.

It was and remains a watershed moment that knowing more doesnt always mean surviving more.
As someone who treats cancer objectively for most of my waking hours, I attend lecture after lecture. I hear from medical oncologists, epidemiologists who lool at population level cancer outcomes

Today I'd like to talk about jet streams, atmospheric turbulence, and climate change.

Why do we even have jet streams? At any fixed altitude, the north-south temperature difference between equator and pole causes the eastward wind to increase with height (wind shear).
You can check out the current positions and speeds of the jet streams interactively at earth.nullschool.net. (Change height to 250 hPa to move up to the altitudes where they typically blow the fastest.)
Jet streams move around from one day to the next and vary in strength. They play a crucial role in steering weather systems as well as aircraft (which enjoy the tailwinds on eastbound flights, but try to avoid the westbound headwinds).

Why does this climate change impact on phenology matter? Because it means that the regions TODAY that are best suited for the grape varieties planted there may not be the best in the coming decades
So what can we do about? Lots, it turns out.

Rajendra Nath Lahiri, was one of the 4 hanged for their role in the Kakori conspiracy, along with Bismil, Ashfaq and Roshan Singh. While Bismil and Ashfaq were well known, not much is known about the other 2 who played an equally vital role.
Rajendra Nath Lahiri, was born on June 29, 1901 in the village of Mohanpur, Pabna district( now in Bangladesh) to Kshiti Mohan Lahiri and Basant Kumari. At the time of his birth, his father was in prison for participating in the activities of the banned Anushilan Samiti.

Alright, let's get this party started: First, numbers aren't 100% accurate but anywhere from 170-190 species of #sharks call Australian waters home. That's a lot, seeing as how there are roughly 500-ish species.
According to the Australian Government's Department of Environment and Energy, of those 170-190 species, around 70 are thought to be endemic. Endemic means "native to a specific region or environment and not occurring naturally anywhere else."
