The 74-year-old, twice convicted politician told the judge in a letter: "I pray I will not die in prison."
He escaped his last 12-year sentence when SCOTUS case McDonnell v. Virginia, which weakened federal anti-bribery laws, voided last convictions.
At today's sentencing, Silver's attorney Michael Feldberg said his client's a "broken man."
"It's the shame, the public humiliation of having his life's work become a scandal," he said.
He adds that the case "brought a great distrust in New York government and I am extremely remorseful for that."
