Ahead of the Central African Republic’s human rights review at the UN, CAR NGOs today briefed the diplomatic community about human rights priorities and recommendations for peace and justice 1/n
Abbé Frederic Nakombo of Commission Épiscopale Nationale Justice et Paix (CEJP) spoke about attacks on religious leaders and impunity for killings. CEPJ recommends that CAR accelerate the operationalization of the new special war crimes court.
Hyacinthe Longba Yaondo of Action des Cretiens Poir L’Abolition de la Torture (ACAT) called on the government to abolish the death penalty and to prevent torture in prisons.
Steve Sangokette, L’Observatoire Centrafricain des Droits de L’Homme (OCDH): Key issues are impunity for war crimes, the pillaging of natural resources, and arms trading. The state must mobilize resources for DDR and operationalize the special war crimes court.
Carine Nadia Fornel Poutou, Association des Femmes Juristes de Centrafrique (AFJC): Women and children continue to suffer from grave violations of human rights. The focus must be on building state presence and security for civilians.
Elisabeth Mbaya, Ligue Centrafricaine des Droits de L’Homme (LCDH): Grave violations committed include extrajudicial killings, torture, pillaging, rape, forced displacement. LCDH recommends the state fight against impunity and ensure state presence.
AbdoulAziz Sali, Le Collectif des Étudiants Musulmans Centrafricains (CEMUC): The rights to education and non-discrimination are not being respected. It is dangerous for Muslim students to try to go to university. Students are attacked.
Murphy Gouykasce, URU Jeunesse et Leadership: Youth need to be able to participate in peace and security initiatives. The government should create professional training centers for youth, and infrastructure for social, economic, and sporting activities.
Ali Ousman, Coordination des Organisations Musulmans Centrafricains (COMUC): Muslims have been subjected to discrimination, exclusion, humiliation, hate speech. Gov’t must create laws against discrimination and ensure minorities can participate in public life.
Albert Sangoubaya, JUPEDEC: We carry out health interventions, build schools, document rights violations. Today, armed groups are still proliferating. The gov’t should open humanitarian corridors.
After the UN UPR pre-session with the diplomatic community today, NGOs will travel to Geneva for meetings at UN, sharing with international community the key human rights issues in the Central African Republic.
