My tumblr account is currently in the hands of tumblr support because it's not recognizing the email I've associated with the account for log in. :(
Well, I waited a couple days to see how things would develop. I've received no comment from @tumblr support. Through error of my own or not, I am effectively locked out of my tumblr account of 8+ years. As you can imagine... that's not an insignificant amount of time.
I've been a part of online communities for a long long time. I've participated in the art community since I was a teenager. Started at DeviantArt. Posted to Livejournal with my sketches and story ideas. I've made some amazing connections with strangers turned friends.
I started tumblr in college. I made an account to keep visual references and resources to practice art with. I learned so much about myself and activisim. I unlearned some very harmful ideas I had about others and became a much more balanced and enriched person.
At first, I was really distraught. Tumblr was where I'd made a home for myself. I watched people with similar interests reblog and comment on my artwork quietly through the tags. One of my comics even went viral!
Let me talk about My Vampire Girlfriend her. I saw people cry over that comic, tag themselves and their girlfriends as the characters, see something of themselves in the vulnerable piece of myself that I included for that short sweet moment where Lilith tells Willow she's worthy.
typo. Whoops. Anyway, I feel less upset about loosing access to that account because... anxiety and endless content really don't go well together. I spent countless hours just scrolling down. Now I have all this free time!
So the upside is that now I have a lot of free time to devote to making art, reading some books, sculpting? Who knows! The sad thing is that I no longer have a large platform to promote my art, and absolutely no way to inform the 2600+ people that I can no longer post to tumblr.
Will I make a new account? Maybe, but certainly not soon. Tumblr urls don't expire until about a year after inactivity. and I've finally unified my social media presence on HezaKey for awhile now. Also I think, I really need the forced break.
I do lament that my reference blog will eventually fade to dust, but that means I should just start using the many books I already own and start learning by doing! Instead of collecting things I never quite use.
