“Overcoming the barriers to VR in HE”
#SUVRConference
VR in the 80s & 90s showed the potential about being *in* another world
The potential is still the same but there are barriers..
#SUVRConference
Barriers-
Materiality of VR- VR is by definition virtual but is material: headsets= neck pain, cables = tangled up etc.
VR doesn’t replicate your body. Note- See EXISTENZ (1999)
Headsets cut you off from the world- your in VR or not
#SUVRConference
Barriers-
Interfaces- currently reflect those from gaming
VR needs to develop its own interface in fear that it might alienate non gamers
#SUVRConference
Barriers-
The Language of VR- no current discourse, constantly comparing it to something else
Requires a new shared language to articulate the educational benefits to students
#SUVRConference
Barriers-
Cybersickness- women are more susceptible than men
Women have wider field of view so headsets are designed for men
#SUVRConference
Barriers-
Cost- Mucho £££, cheaper platforms (Google cardboard) still require expensive smartphones and limit experience
#SUVRConference
Conclusions- very very exciting (thunderbolt & lightning)
Still not quite there but so much potential
