ON "MAKING IT"

In becoming a Professional Athlete, or any world class individual

The world consistently (and proudly) proclaims that the odds of making it are "less than 1%"

Is this True?

Technically, yes

Practically, it is a Lie.
What is The Truth?

The Truth is that 75% of the population in question functions out of hope, rather than seriousness

Of the remaining 25%, a significant amount will drop out due to financial hardship, pressure, and the weight of society and family's defeatist messages
What is the Actual percentage of "making it?"

The actual percentage is 100%

For the one who has no choice but to make it

This is the only person that matters

There is no nobility in failure

Excuses are for the one who can live without having "made it"

I was particularly moved by @michelleobama’s honest & sensitive observations abt her extended & connected family of grandparents great aunts, uncles who are part of her world. Each in their own way navigating the reality of the limitations imposed on them by racial inequality.
Likewise the college experience of those of us who entered elite colleges that were so culturally unfamiliar to us (Michelle’s priceless response to someone saying they “rowed crew”). I never heard the term “WASP” before arriving at Vassar. We had to learn to navigate the new.

I know that many readers will open @MichelleObama ‘s #Becoming to read about her time on the campaign & in the White House. But the part to which I was most drawn was the first part about her growing up on the Southside of Chicago w her family.
Not enough has been written about the lives of Black girls and boys like Michelle (and me) - children of working class parents striving in big cities during this brief period of promise - in the decade and a half after the passage of the major civil rts statutes.
We were cildren who saw struggle and promise as embedded in daily life. And it shaped our bone deep sense of what might be possible in this country tempered by strong and unshakeable pragmatism about the existence of barriers.

I think it's important to challenge all pieces of "Known Writing Advice," all those chestnuts of Vital Lore, and to see what they are and what works for you. We all have our own weird fingerprints to imprint upon this thing we do.
I think it IS important to talk about the things you do and the processes you use to write and tell a story and to hold them up and examine them -- share them with others, and listen to their ways of doing things, too.
