A couple weeks ago, I started getting tagged in very similar-looking tweets by a couple of accounts with which I've never interacted - @hardikmakadia and @mitulmakadia. Let's take a quick look.
Both of these accounts are automated via Statusbrew and on pretty similar schedules. Their primary purpose seems to be to promote a pair of websites: marutitech(dot)com and wotnot(dot)io.
We downloaded tweets linking to the aforementioned sites over the past year, resulting in tweets from 782 accounts. Of these, 372 (48%) are likely automated based on 24/7 activity and/or 90% or more of their tweets originating via automation services.
The 372 automated accounts linking to marutitech(dot)com and wotnot(dot)io use a variety of automation services to post their content. There are occasional tweets via the website and phone app, but they're few and far between.
What are these bots promoting, anyway? Judging by the websites they link, they're promoting a company that makes. . . bots - specifically chatbots you can embed in your website. The free trial was fun.
Conclusion: unlike most of what we study, these bots are almost certainly commercial spam rather than anything political, but since they reached out and said hi, we figured we'd post about them.
