There's been a bit of tempest in a teapot lately re the #IntegrityInitiative, following the release of leaked documents. We downloaded tweets containing "Integrity Initiative"/#IntegrityInitiative, yielding 27213 tweets from 9054 accounts in the last 10 days.

Retweet network for "Integrity Initiative"/#IntegrityInitiative. Several of the prominent accounts (@georgegalloway, @Ian56789, @ShoebridgeC) have a history of pushing #FalseFlag theories about the #Skripal poisoning. Sputnik reporter @KitKlarenberg also puts in an appearance.
Speaking of Sputnik, here are the media sources most frequently linked from tweets containing "Integrity Initiative"/#IntegrityInitiative. Sputnik and RT comprise 45% of the volume, with the majority of the rest being comprised of Western conspiracy-oriented sites.
Much of the traffic surrounding the #IntegrityInitiative is not only critical but seeks to use that criticism to cast doubt on reporting on the influence of Kremlin disinformation on other topics: everything from the #Skripal poisoning to #Brexit to Syria.

What does the text in this tweet have to do with the image, which appears to be an ad for a credit repair service? Probably very little, but contextual failure of this sort can be a sign of automation. Let's dig in.

Search for the text of that tweet yields 15 accounts that tweeted it (images vary), all of which appear to be hawking credit/legal services. Also, based on the use of automation services and the presence of round-the-clock activity, they're bots. Are there more like them?
We can expand the set by searching for various elements of the content of the existing accounts and limiting the results to those accounts that fit the profile. Examples of searches to try:

- tweet text
- websites being pushed
- the phone numbers being advertised

Today we'll take a look at accounts that are by and large automated, but likely have a more hands-on human operator than a pure "bot". We have two examples; one on the right, one on the left. Coin flip says look at the right-wing one first.

First up: @gerfingerpoken. This account is presently tweeting round-the-clock using "SweeterTweet", an automation service that will allow one to "schedule a massive 500 repeating tweets for any day or time" and features a cartoon strawberry (with chocolate) on their website.
Use of SweeterTweet is only the latest incarnation of @gerfingerpoken's automation. Back in 2017, they used a combination of #PJNET and something called smqueue. Despite @gerfingerpoken's protestations, Twitter was correct to flag the account as automated.

Some Twitter bots engage in a variety of complex and interesting behaviors. @AlexWal1980 is not one of them. This accounts is prolific, though - 306K tweets in 6 months.

Unsurprisingly, @AlexWal1980 operates round-the-clock (chart shows most recent 3200 tweets only). The vast majority of tweets are posted via "Alex-Walker-app", likely a custom script created for the purpose of automating this account.
What accounts does @AlexWal1980 retweet? Given the far greater relative frequency of @mitchellvii, @JackPosobiec, @Cernovich, and @FoxNews, the bot may be mining their timelines and the more rarely retweeted accounts are included due to being RT'd by one of those four.

1/ I was suspended by Twitter earlier today because Bellingcat's Dan Kaszeta complained that I had breached Twitter rules against exposure of personal information in a tweet about his business relationship with #IntegrityInitiative. I appealed to Twitter .
2/ on the grounds that my tweet observing that my tweet did not violate their privacy policy and, in particular, that my observatino that Kaszeta had been employed by a "UK government propaganda campaign" was squarely within their policy for permitted speech
3/ In their suspension notice, Twitter required me to remove tweet about Kzszeta as condition of return of service. Much to my surprise, Twitter accepted my appeal and restored my account with no condition on removing the tweet about Kaszeta. Good for Twitter.

It’s ironic that western governments are guilty of precisely what they insist the Russians are doing with regard to disinformation. And no one seems to care.

Reading today’s @Ofcom ruling that @RT_com broke impartiality rules, one thought repeatedly comes to mind: If BBC Sky etc were ever made subject to the same intense scrutiny and high standards, how impartial would they be found to be? The full report here:

It’s perhaps significant to note that @Ofcom lists programmes receiving ten or more complaints. No @RT_com broadcasts are listed, so its investigation was launched despite only a very small number of people having complained (see Audience Complaints: 2018)

1/The govt was forced to admit in parliament that its ‘Conflict Fund’ funds the Integrity Initiative. But there is no mention of this funding I can find in any of the govt documents previously made public on the Fund. I think we know why that is. bit.ly/2uaoGfv

1. The GOP Lacks Strategic Courage - here is my take on #Release the Memo
Once again Trumpians were left holding the bag and having to do a clean-up in aisle 5.
2. The GOP yet again over promised and under delivered. Frustratingly this was not for a lack of information or Democratic malfeasance but from the complete mismanagement by the GOP.
3. The GOP lacks strategic courage to do what needs to be done. The GOP twists itself to accommodate & appease the DNC. The Senate Intelligence Committee took the political scandal of the century and distilled it down into a weak & mealy-mouthed critique of the FBI FISA process.
