I suspect one reason this mega-breach isn’t causing a bigger reaction is that it has no name. Usually hacks and breaches are quickly dubbed something catchy which catapults them thru the coverage and watercooler debates.
Cleverest I can come up is #ChuckE in reference to Chuck E Cheese’s where you get tokens for your birthday parties, in reference to how access tokens were hacked thru exploits in birthday video upload tool. But that’s quite a US-centric reference.
News overload tho
Another reason. No one really know how bad it is. Goes far beyond Facebook.

Interesting bit of revisionist history I'm seeing:

Both for myself and other journalists/writers/academics in China who write about the Chinese internet and its development, even referencing the role of the great firewall or protectionism. To even mention it seems taboo. (1/n)
I, and others I know, are being told we cannot write about the GFW as a factor.

This is often replaced by a narrative that says China's internet companies simply outcompeted their foreign counterparts, and that foreign internet cos were just unable to "localize." (2/n)

This is the "Hothouse Earth" paper that was all over the news yesterday. pnas.org/content/early/… It is a "perspective" piece - basically an essay rather than new modelling or data analysis, in which the authors present an argument supported by existing literature. (Thread)
The authors draw on a very diverse set of literature to paint a holistic picture of how a chain of feedback processes or events could *potentially* take place and lead to very large climate warming once a threshold is passed, and also how the risks of this could still be avoided.
The term “Hothouse Earth” is used to describe the conditions that could potentially occur, which are outside those of cycles of ice ages with milder periods in between that have occurred over the last few hundred thousand years (ie: within the experience of the human species).

I suspect one reason the Supreme Court did not cite anything for the first sentence in this paragraph of Carpenter is that it was invented by Carpenter's brief. Which makes the 2nd sentence kind of amusing: As Chief knows, Riley's discussion has nothing to do w/ what is a search.
2/ The Court has in the past referred to "diminished" expectations of privacy as a reason why a search might be reasonable without a warrant. In the cost/benefit of reasonableness, the thinking runs, a strong govt need for search outweighs diminished expectations of privacy.
3/ By claiming (wrongly) that the 3PD was about "diminished" expectations of privacy -- rather that the elimination of them -- Carpenter moves the concept over to a different doctrinal box of what is a search and then requires a warrant even to the "diminished" expectation.

When attention is very scarce, and you have some discretionary ability to boost signals, any act of public curiosity becomes a political act.

Whatever the content of your opinion on X, simply being publicly curious about X (minimum=liking a tweet) sends a message.
I suspect one reason @robinhanson drew fire for broaching sex redistribution is simply because as a signal booster he diverted scarce public attention to that topic.

The actual opinion matters less than the act of putting that topic in the public short-term magic 7±2 meme buffer
Boosting the topic says “the needs/motives/desires of this group X are worth more attention than those of every other group I’m not signal-boosting.”

I suspect it would be useful for public figures to preface displays of public curiosity with justification of importance.
